Jon and Kate - getting divorced

Apparently when married white people do so, we subsidize them to live better than we do by turning them into celebrities.

What a joke-- they are welfare parents with condos and an entourage.

Uh, "they" aren't white, she is.

as much as it pains me to say this, at least the Duggars seem to be fairly capable of affording their life without the shows...although I am sure there is a point where the show money helps. Like I said, it pains me to say it because they creep me out, too.

But when we continue to pump out reality shows about these outsized families, more monsters like Jon and Kate will emerge who have kids and intend to pay for them with reality TV. Octomom is a perfect example of this, too.

You are right, 10M between 2 divorced people and 8 children is not retirement money. Factor in the cost of healthcare and college and daily expenses, Kate better pray that those kids stay cute so she can turn them into little Lindsay Lohans.

College for the children will be paid by the TV show/production...it's in their contract.

As much as I dislike them this really is not true. They are not taking any public dollars or your tax dollars. They have a show and sell books. You are not watching the show or buying books because you wish to support their lifestyle you are doing it because it entertains you. They are compensated for the ad revenue this brings in.

"Criminal." "Monster." Really, does it make you feel like a big girl to throw around these ridiculous terms about people you don't even know?

Most of these kids will be so f-ed up by the time college rolls around I doubt that will be a big concern. Hopefully rehab is in the contract as well.

it's good that you are pulling for them, pp. we need more people like you in the world.

I give them credit that they found a way to raise their family together without being on the dole. It just stinks that they like many families who decide they aren't happy forget that when you brings kids in the world, divorce should not be an option. I feel even stronger when their are mulitiples involved that came through fertility treatment since you can't say it was "whoops." I actually believe Kate when she says she didn't want to divorce-she may have benfitted from counseling to reign in her control issues. Jon is just a jerk a flat out loser. Good luck to the next woman who winds up with him.

Seems like lots of people are so angry about this family. Must mean you watch the show and contribute to the creation of these "monsters." (Such ridiculous hyperbole, btw).

They're just a family, like your family. They happen to have a tv show and now they are getting a divorce like 50% of all American couples. Why so much hatred and judgment? Why hope that their kids will be "f'ed up?" That is really sad for you that you hope that for someone's children.

No one was actually hoping their kids will be fucked up. The comment was hopefully rehab is in the contract.

I think people are angry because kids are being exploited so obviously. I don't even watch the damn show and I can see that. It got out of hand. Not saying they predicted this or meant to do this, but at some point, as a mom, as a dad, you pull the producer aside and say this is messing with my family.

For me this is where the outrage comes from, especially since I am surrounded my friends and family who are having trouble conceiving and would give anything to have the options for fertility treatments they did, or the success they had with 2 successful implantations or whatever the term is.

The kid's college will run around $1.5 million and they are in private school now. Lets say the private tuition was 20K per kid plus nannies at say 50K that is $210,000 per year alone. The house is large and probably could cost around 60K a year with grounds upkeep, housekeepers, heating, maintenance, taxes, and insurance. I can't imagine what private health insurance for 10 people would cost. The security, vacations, and other items would double everything else. Once they start maintaining separate residences they will run through even more. The more money you have the more it costs to maintain what you have.

Ok - $10 million can generate $400k/yr WITHOUT touching principal -- $400k in rural PA? I would think they could manage... and again, this is assuming not touching principal and these days there isn't much inflation AND they may even be able to get some growth on that $10m!!

Even if each kid spends $40k for 4 years to go to school, they would only touch about $1.28m of the principal.

once the kids are gone -- I think they still have PLENTY to live on.

Please do tell me what is generating 4% returns right now?

I have a good chunk of change and this is not what I'm seeing. Even my fancy pants financial advisor can't seem to make a tomato grow, let alone a bank account.

Then how did Britney almost fritter away $100 million? And Lindsay Lohan as well - and many other child stars who had millions and millions - they don't know what they are doing and the money disappears. They don't sit back and have a reasonable lifestyle.

People don't know basic concepts about money. Yes, anyone with any sense could live very happily for the rest of their lives on 10 million - but a poster just mentioned Jon is hunting for a very expensive condo in Vegas - Trump Towers. He will likely gamble it all away. Already he is going off to bars and picking up young women. I'm just not thinking this guy will do what is right. I hope I'm wrong, because I do think the kids are adorable, and they deserve better.

sorry, when I referred to them as monsters earlier, I should have said fame-seeking attention whores - does that make you feel better?

while I may not be a "fancy pants" financial advisor (just a plain pants one!) - I assure you - there are many ways to generate an income stream of 4% in this market.

1 - Principal Preferred Securities Fund -- yield I think is around 8% - up 18% YTD
2 - AT&T has a 6.65% div yield
3 - most annuities (an insurance product) will GUARANTEE 5% yield for the rest of your life (if you are over 59.5yo)
4 - Legg Mason Managed Municipal Partners Bond Fund is yielding a little over 4%
5 - American Funds Bond Fund of America is yielding over 4%

I could go on.....but this is a very diverse sampling of what's out there. Some of these things actually even GROW in addition to their yield!
