John is a total loser. Kate has found success and he can't handle that. He looks like a total fool with his spiky hair and earrings trying to be young.
I totally felt for her - walking on eggshells when she knew she was right about where to put the houses, and not being able to speak up for fear of WWIII.

She has found SUCCESS? What success? She is a reality tv "star" and until recently went around to rural churches asking for "love offerings" until she moved into her big huge house and could no longer cry poor mouth to ignorant country folk.

Please explain to me how kate is a success? She is the mother to 8 children in the middle of a divorce on national TV and is tabloid fodder, please explain to my how that is successful. If she did not have her TV show, she would be nothing more than another single mom our society would have to support.

her bank account says the opposite.

she is a best-selling author.

Of course it is not a traditional career path and no one is saying she is a perfect mom by any means. But she is doing the best she can do to provide for her family, and while it may not be the decision most of us would make, most of us are not trying to provide for 8 with a lazy unproductive husband who was fired for "misusing company resources." She has found a lucrative way to provide for them, and while I admit there are issues, she is being made a villain when a man in her position would certainly be called successful. Jon is a BUM. A total bum. The only mistake she made was that she treated him like a teenager instead of the three year old he actually is. Instead of scolding him when he was an ass, like you do for a teenager, she should have handled him with kid gloves like you do for a three year old, and maybe she would have prevented his pathetic mid-life crisis and affair with the homely home-wrecker of a girlfriend.
She's better off without him.

Kate says that she has had enough of Jon's being angry. Honestly, if I was Jon, I too would be angry. I couldn't imagine what it would be like to have someone constantly after me, dictating every little detail, of every little thing, and scolding me if I didn't do things "the right way".

Jon is clearly feeling as if he is missing out on something, and that he is being glued to this large family. I think he would have eventually felt this way, no matter how many children he had.

Kate is a woman who needs to be in control all the time. She makes her five year old kids wear bibs for crying out loud.

I like that they are going to keep the kids in the same house, and they will switch who is there. This is a good plan, one that I am sure was made because of filming schedules, but it will probably make it easier for the kids. Not that this will be easier for them.

They both clearly love their children, and are devoted to them.

Maybe they will work through this. They are separating, and if PA law is anything like MD law, in order to have a legal separation they have to file for divorce. I hope they both will seek therapy, and work through the issues they have. This is something they should have already been doing.

DH and I had issues as well, and nearly divorced. Luckily it wasn't out in the open for all the world to see, but it was to the point where I informed both of our families that I was leaving him. It was over. DH and I started really talking, and things have changed, gotten better, though we are still on the road to recovery. Maybe this can happen for them too. There has been so much that has happened for them in such a short period of time, and it creates so much stress, and each person deals with stress differently.

So you define success by the amount of money one has in the bank? Well, those guys who ran Enron had a lot of money in the bank and many still do. There are MILLIONs of people with a lot of money in the bank who are failures and MILLIONS of people without a dime to their names who are a success and don't have to do it by peddling their families.

As far as being a best selling author, as you kidding me? Anne Applebaum is a literary success. Kate Gosling will not be winning any awards. Heidi Fleiss also wrote a best selling book, both Heith and Kate are whores in a differet right.

You are right because Hitler was a success as well. Fame, power, and money. What more could one want out of life?

Kate may be successful now but does not have the kind of success that will last.

In five years she will be divorced, probably alone (not thinking that fling with the body guard is super stable), have 8 kids who likely resent her, and probably won't be selling any books.

I would be surprised if she has money at that point. Something like 50% of big time lottery winners go through hundreds of millions of $$$ in a couple of years. You don't think it can be done but it can. Look at Britney Spears, before her big comeback, she was worth $100 million but it was reported that she was in danger of going through most of it already before her dad stepped in.

Once the freebees dry up and the show fizzles (which I think they are at their peak and it is only downhill from now) she is accoustomed to a certain lifestyle and she will blow through it all.

I too think she will be alone. What man would want to be with a nagging hag who has 8 children? As long as she has money, she will do OK, but when that dries up, who would want that kind of baggage? Clearly Jon, the most passive man on earth, even had his limits.

"What mother thinks its a good idea to film the ending of their marriage on national tv to be preserved forever so the kids can watch as well as everyone else?"

Ha! Love this. Blame the bad mom and let dad off the hook. They are in a contract. You think it was her decision alone to do this? Then you're a fool.

I disagree. Kate is a survivor and whether people like her or not she developed a "brand" for her family and made it happen. I think she will always make something happen. Jon did nothing in terms of putting dinner on the table. He is a glorified "house husband" and that is just not sexy. Her aggressive ways are really sort of manlike only that men don't get grief for being assertive. Look at what happened with the "crooked houses"--he was such a baby about where they should be placed and...he was wrong but she looked bitchy for getting it right. Why am I even talking about this.

Yes - Kate is a success because she is a successful reality TV star. Not all people on reality TV are successful or have their shows renewed year after year - most shows fail after the first season. I really believe that she felt that she had no other choice but to continue with the show and branch out into speaking engagements, with a husband who wasn't working and 8 kids to feed. It may be unseemly to many, but I think she felt that she had to do it.
Anonymous
They have eight kids to feed because after having twins they had six implanted.

So they have eight kids that they can't afford so they pimp them out. THey get filmed 24/7 to the point that they think that they are accomplished or important when in fact they are a freak show.

It's so shocking that he's a child and she's a prima donna. Who saw that coming?
Anonymous
How are they devoted to their kids? If they were, they wouldn't put them in front of the TV.

Neither one is doing what's best for their children.

I've never watched this show before but I just wanted to weigh in that my 85 year old Grandma is in mourning over this divorce, as if it's happening to one of us (yes, she's starting to think she's "friends" with the tv characters a little bit). But still, there is something about this family that people tend to empathize with. I find it interesting how many of you have taken sides. I am anti-reality teevee show. I don't I've ever seen a single person come out of the show looking good except Yao from survivor last year or the year before The rest of the shows just seem determined to exploit and it's a catch 22 -- something about being filmed 24/7 must get inside of you and when it does, and exacerbates whatever problems you have, the world is watching. Everything is manipulated, everything is magnified, everything is public.

Regardless of one's feelings about going on a teevee show I have a hard time understanding why anyone would subject unwitting children to this. Their lives will never be the same. I understand that they wanted to provide for the family financially, but there must have been other ingenuious ways to do this. I kind of wonder if, in the beginning, they both thought they were doing what was best for the kids and then it just spiraled out of control. It seems to me they must hate themselves, and by extension, one another for the role they played in their family's undoing.

Sad, sad, sad.
