Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
Well now you can't |
Why can't you educate your child in a religious school? |
Can I stop paying my portion of the public school taxes, BTW my home is assessed at 2 million and I have multiple rentals so the argument that I pay very little can be thrown out. |
Why don't we trade, you can pay for my taxes that go for things I do not agree and I'll will pay your taxes for the things you do not agree. So, we are even. |
You may be able to request, but it will appropriately be refused. Look, it was't that long ago that people were afraid of gays teaching the kids..or racial minorities, or *gasp* catholics... |
| Great. We're already facing a 100m shortfall. Why not spend another million on something like this to put us further in the hole? It's not just a policy change. Consultants will be brought in, administrative training for all employees, form changes to reflect the new policy. I could go on and on. And if you think parents opposing will quietly walk away without a legal battle..... |

Everyone needs to take the time to watch last night's school board meeting.
The disdain and disregard for the parents of the district shown by the majority of the school board members at that meeting was simply appalling. For three of the members in particular, there was such a condescending snideness in just about everything that came out of their mouths, especially the member representing the Braddock district and they guy that started quoting scripture. Their arrogance was very surprising to me. There was such an attitude of "Oh you silly, stupid, uninformed parents." (pat the head). It was very enlightening to watch that meeting and to hear all the school board members speak. |

link to video please?
They are all up for re-election this year: http://www.fcps.edu/schlbd/members/bdmembers.shtml Time to vote them out!!! |
I was there and I agree, the people that came out against the policy change were completely unruly and disrespectful. I was in shock. The hatred emanating was palpable. The comments around me were ugly and hate filled. I was reminded of the Westboro Baptist Church. The people that came shown complete disregard for the school board members and the democratic process. |
Well, at least Elizabeth Shultz. |
Not the PP, but how about paying for what the majority of citizens want. The citizens don't want this and our representives are not representing us. Elections matter. It's time for change. |
I don't know if they posted it online yet. I watched it on the cable access channel. It was infuriating to see the complete lack of regard for parent and community input that was clearly expressed by some of the members, along with their refusal to even consider any budget implications or to even take the time to ask the questions about how this will affect budgets. Their unwillingness to agree to a few months time to at least give the appearance that they were A) considering their constituents' viewpoints, either for, against or somewhere in the middle and B) to make some attempt to do this in the right way and to get the best policy and all the coss figured out first were what bothered me the most. Such arrogance shown by the school board last night. After seeing them in action on such an important and controversial issue, I don't trust many of them to handle other important issues, especially the budget crisis. It was clear that they are not there to represent the families in the district. |
She was one of only two members who actually listened to her constituents and tried to represent the people who elected her. The others all basically said that yes, they were flooded with emails from constituents who opposed this measure or who wanted the board to take more time, but that they didn't care. She also had the character to stand up to those against the measure who were getting very loud and quieted them down so that the board members who were on tue opposing side could speak. She was one of a small handful of board members who actually showed respect for both sides to have their arguments presented and who wanted to take the time to discuss and debate. There was another board member that deserves respect, the gentleman who seconded her motion so that it could at least be discussed, even though he completely disagreed with her position. He should be commended for that because he clearly disagreed with her but respected the process. |
The school board is there to represent the people of the district. They should have adopted Elizabeth Schultz' proposal. |
I am sorry, but your interpretation is completely incorrect. The people who were shouting down the school board member and not letting them speak to the point where Ms. Shultz had to admonish the people who were against the policy addition were the ones who were disrespectful. The SB did listen to constituents view points. Just because they voted differently from your point of view does not mean that they did not listen. |
