Re: motivation to lose weight, did you see the episode of 20/20 where they got a group of women and took pictures of them almost naked (bikinis, I think) before they started the diet. They then told the women if they missed their target goal of x pounds by the end of the program, the pictures would be broadcast in the follow up show.
Turns out, this was the HUGEST motivator ever, and damn near every one of them dropped the weight, never missed a gym session, watched what they ate, etc. So maybe me meeting up with an ex BF for a fling in 3 months is beneficial to my health?!? |
great info! |
OP here: wow, that's alot of exercise. not knocking it. i'm sure it really has its benefits: i could eat pizza again ![]() |
It depends on your build. I'm stocky and have a lot of muscle. I'm 10-15 pounds overweight and I wear size 14 pants. (No one ever believes I wear a size 14). If I got down to a size 10, I would be skinny! If I got to a size 6, I should be hospitalized! |
I'm skinny and I don't exercise. I'm 112 lbs and 5'5".
But maybe nobody would ever want to be living my lifestyle. It's not pleasurable, thats for sure. I do not drink soda at all. I do not drink alcohol at all. I drink orange juice occasionally and just water. I do not eat any sugary stuff (so no desserts, no sweet stuff at all). I eat only brown rice, whole grain bread, lots of fresh vegetables (raw or steamed broccoli, carrots), some cheese. I eat chicken a few times a week though. I eat red meat maybe once every two weeks. I go out to restaurants maybe once every two weeks for thai, indian, or italian. If you eat like this and your portions aren't huge, its really hard to gain weight. |
Genetics. I've also always been a pretty healthy eater and exercise regularly. I generally don't buy much junk food or ever eat any fast food except burritos. I plan meals in advance, drink a lot of water, don't drink soda, don't really snack, and skip dessert. I do have a weakness for wine, french fries, and cheese and I let myself indulge but not every day. Well, except for the cheese. I guess that's where the genes make a difference. |
Meant to add that I am 5'6" and 117 lbs. You can decide if I am skinny enough to be considered skinny. |
I always find it very amusing (not really in a ha ha way though) women who know their weight to the pound (112, 117). Not 'about 110' or about '120'. Always seemed kind of odd to me that a person could rattle off their exact weight. |
When you are that consious of your weight, you weigh yourself at least once a week, if not every day, so it is not odd at all to know your exact weight. |
when you have health problems related to weight, it's important to track changes in your weight. to do so, you need to know your exact weight. why so critical? perhaps you are blessed with good genes and never have to really know your weight. if you are 5'2" 5 lbs is a dress size. moving up and down 2lbs here or there makes a difference. why am i explaining myself to you???? got to get back to more important things |
I agree that it totally depends on your build. I'm 5'3" and currently weigh about 155 lbs, which would be near obese for some, but I have a very muscular build -- if you saw me you'd probably just say I need to lose a little weight (I carry it all in my butt and thighs so if you saw me in a skirt or dress you may not think that I'm overweigtht at all). I am in no way at my ideal weight and actually just started back at the gym and the South Beach diet today. Just as a point of reference, when I weigh 140 I wear a size 6. Sounds crazy, right? My new goal is to weigh b/w 130-135 lbs and fit into a size 4. Wish me luck! |
Agree with PP--I'm 5'6" and weigh 155 and wear a size 10 in jeans, size 8 in skirts--not skinny, but totally "normal" IMO and probably a smaller size than people would think just hearing the number. At my thinnest back in high school when I wore a size 6, I weighed 140 pounds! |
I am 5.4 and 130 lbs - people tell me I am thin and I wear a size 4 at stores like J. Crew and Banana Republic. I think I am in shape - but I have muscular legs and thighs and would never consider myself skinny. Although, I think I would look emaciated at 110 or 115..... |
I'm just like you except about an inch or so taller. Same weight. I'm currently a size 8, but I have a muscular build. If I lost 20 lbs (which I'm trying to do), I'd be a size 4 as well. When I was 140 lbs, I was a size 6. I miss those days.... |
