Skinny moms - how do you keep the weight off? Is it possible...

"Controlling your insulin levels is one of the most powerful anti-aging strategies you can possibly implement. Sugar and grains cause your body to produce insulin and high insulin levels are the single largest physical cause of accelerated aging. If you want to slow down aging and be healthy then you need to change your grains for greens. Insulin resistance is the basis of all of the chronic diseases of aging, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, obesity, diabetes, cancer, all the so-called chronic diseases of aging."

Much more scientific than my garbled explaination!!

Great info!

In order to become "normal" again I started to change my habits. I had picked up "fat" ahbits and I am have been getting back to "skinny" habits. I do not drink and soda at all, not even diet. I do not drink juice, not even in the am. I drink water and tea and that is about it. I am always trying to remember to drink more water. On special occaisions I have champagne or wine but try and minimize it. I also only eat when I am hungry and only if it is a "meal." No snacking at all. So, if I am hungry I have breakfast, if not, I wait until lunch time. When I do eat a meal I try to satify many needs and cravings at once: sweet & protein & good mouth feel. For instance, for breakfast I like to have a low fat yougurt, a big handful of almonds aned maybe a cup of blueberries or an apple with a big jug of water. And so on...

Not to be mean, but size 10 really isn't "skinny" -- at best it can be average if you are taller. But congrats on the weight loss and keep at it.

What a snotty response. I think she should have been congratulated on what she's been able to achieve.

Besides, she didn't say she was "skinny." She said she used to be, is now a size 10 and is working on losing more weight. Geesh.

I, for one, would love to be a size 10. That would be very skinny for me!

I agree that these are good tips, but size 10 is not skinny at all. I'm a size 6 and I'm not skinny.

My God! How do you define skinny? anorexic?

OP asks: Can you be skinny without exercise? Sounds like you want the easy way out. Yes, this can happen if you eat celery and drink water. You don't see too many fat people who work out 5 times a week do you? Also, you can be skinny and very unhealthy due to lack of exercise. Exercise is to keep your body (internal not just external) healthy.

OP here: yeah, i was looking for the easy way out. it's hard to get back into the "swing" of exercising but I started on monday per another writers suggestion. only 1/2 hour a day, high intensity cardio. it's actually not that bad. i listen to my ipod and break a sweat.

Everyone has a different definition of "skinny". In Hong Kong, you can not find a dress over a size 2. Yes, a size 2. I don't think billions of people in Asia are anorexic. In America, a 6 is thin. Either way, it's a huge accomplishment to be thin in a country where 30% of the people are obese. It takes alot of willpower and work.

Exercise is a necessity whether you are skinny or not. If you care about your health, it's just common sense to get regular exercise. Once you make it a regular part of your life, you'll wonder why you didn't start sooner.

Ok. As the founder of the beauty forum, I feel I must speak.

I hate the word "skinny" and am not really hot on "thin" either.

Weight is not nearly as informative to me as is BMI, body composition, and overall fitness.

My goal is to be in shape -- to have a toned body. And to be strong cardiovascularly. So that I improve my chances of being there for my children.

I think it is very hard for women over 40 that have had kids to be a 4. I want to be a "healthy weight". Which means muscles and curves and strength and not some skinny waif.

I would love to be a six. I'm working on it.

Ok, I've been where you are. I lost 60 lbs and it was hard. I don't think there is anything wrong with being thin. I actually respect women of all sizes, it's who you are that is important. This a beauty forum, and for many western thinkers, "thin" is in (i clarify western because in countries like India, heavier women are more fashionable). I don't think there is anything wrong with aspiring to be HEALTHY and THIN. As the OP stated, she lost weight due to diabetes issues. Her doctor asked her to "stay thin". There is a correlation in this particular case with being healthy and thin. Also note, others above have cited scientific research that links lower calorie intake with longer longevity. Oprah has built an empire partially due to this topic.

Truthfully, I feel like you. I'm 38 and am a size 14. But I must admit I do feel a little jealous of women who are waifish... My sister is a size 2 and she looks great. I wish I could be her size and am working on it. I don't think I"ll reach a 2 but a 4, a 6 would be great!

You do NOT need to exercise to lose weight. Exercise is good for you from a cardio vascular perspective but it is not as a method for losing weight. This is a medical fact.

What about basketball players?? If you overeat, all the exercise in the world won't keep you at a healthy weight.

According to whom?

Yes, you can lose weight without moving a muscle. But exercise, along with a proper diet, will accelerate your weight loss. And it will increase your metabolism, particularly if you do strength training.

That is a medical fact.

It is easier to lose weight if you exercise (as long as you don't eat more to compensate), but it is not required. This according to the National Weight Loss Registry (I think that's what it's called), which is a university-sponsored research group dedicated to studying the successful habits of people who have lost at least 30 pounds and kept it off for at least a year. (Check their website). They have a great book about weight loss called Thin For Life, in which they state that of those on the registry, a substantial number didn't exercise--not the majority, but more than you might think.

Yes, well. The Department of Health and Human Services states that if you have lost weight and want to keep it off, you should be doing 60-90 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise a day.

Yes, you can lose weight without using a muscle. And your ass will look just like my mom's.
