Skinny moms - how do you keep the weight off? Is it possible...

stay off of lean frozen foods. they don't fill you up.

if you are stress eating, stop and think. have a game plan: e.g. if i stress eat,i'll reach for dark chocolate and eat only 2 pieces...

I am thin, and my weight is lowest the day I start my period. It goes up by about 4 lbs by about a week before I start again. I can't lose weight dieting. I just hunker down and wait for my period to start so my resting weight kicks in again.

that's really interesting. i always gain a couple pounds with my period. but lately, my weight will go down 3lbs one day and up 3lbs the next day. All within the span of a day.

I should probably have told you all that, at my heaviest, right after finishing bf'ing baby #2, I weighed 225!!! I GAIN weight when I breastfeed, even with exercising. Its awful. I also have not lost any of my boobs like my mom promised I would if I breastfed. But anyway, at a 160 (and a D cup) right now I feel really good about myself. I am a lot less lethargic and I am guessing my cholesterol is down. I never had pre-diabetes or high blood pressure but I did turn 40 this year and hated that I was FAT and 40. I also didn't want my daughter to have any body issues because she had a fat mom and I didn't want my son to be embarrassed of me. At 160 I look pretty good and feel really good. My goal is 140, and then we will see. I think 125 at 40 is unhealthy/unrealistic although my doctor told me that it is scientifically true that "almost" starving yourself prolongs your life. Scary but true... Its a whole lifestyle and proven theory.

Who is your doctor?? I would love to have a doctor who understands the science of calorie restriction and its effect on life span and health.

I think I saw that on Oprah-or some news show--Honestly, I'd rather live shorter than starve myself daily--uggh!

If you think of it as starving then you have no idea what I'm talking about. And I'm also talking about science, not the Oprah show.

OP here: in many cases being thin is key for health. my case is diabetes and heart disease. my doctor really wants me to stay at my current weight. so yes, in my case, i feel like i'm missing out on great food. am i starving? no, i'm eating healthier; and trying not to eat when stressed (or extremely buzzed). but as mentioned, i'm a foodie and i miss eating without restrictions... i've always been on the heavier side till now and don't want diabetes again. it's a slippery slope. you gain weight, you're dependent on insulin, your moods swing, if you get a cut - it can be serious.

i also learned that calorie restriction does prolong life from medical research. it's odd but true. i'm not sure the science behind it though. i think it has to do with maintaining leveled sugars.

Me again. You think that's weird... periods are weird on the entire body. If I happen to get a zit in the days before or during my period, they will not pop. Blackheads won't pop. It's as if my face is sealed up! Then, a few days later, it's back to normal. I only recently started putting the two together - - no telling what else happens monthly timed to my period that I'm not associating.

If you are interested in learning more about the science of calorie restriction, start here:

http://cron-web.org/default.htm

I think the most interesting thing I've read in the field, and I've read a lot and prefer well-designed studies reported in peer-reviewed journals, is that fasting before chemo treatments reduces or even eliminates the side effects and increases the effectiveness of the chemo. That's a subject for a whole nother thread, and probably not on DCUM, but I mention it for anyone who comes to this thread and is intrigued by the idea that there may be some interesting medical research related to eating only the amount of food that will sustain a body weight near the lower end of the healthy BMI range. (Which is not starvation if you are optimizing your nutrition.)

PP is correct. Also, every time you eat something your body releases insulin. When you eat constantly (snacking all day) your body is constantly releasing insulin for your body to handle and your body become insulin resistant. Also, insulin ages you. It makes you look older. It ages your internal organs. By eating a nutritiously whole but calorically restricted diet, you are reducing the effects of insulin on your body thereby exposing your organs to "less aging" (for lack of a better term). MDs believe that this is one of the reasons calorie restriction increases age. At least this is how my doctor explained it to me.

Reminds me of the old joke:

Doctor to patient: You need to stop eating and drinking so much.
Patient: Will I live longer?
Doctor: No, but it will feel a lot longer.

20:58 here. I found this quote to better explain what I wrote in my post:

"Controlling your insulin levels is one of the most powerful anti-aging strategies you can possibly implement. Sugar and grains cause your body to produce insulin and high insulin levels are the single largest physical cause of accelerated aging. If you want to slow down aging and be healthy then you need to change your grains for greens. Insulin resistance is the basis of all of the chronic diseases of aging, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, obesity, diabetes, cancer, all the so-called chronic diseases of aging."

Much more scientific than my garbled explaination!!
