Yeah, you're right. I posted that and I regretted it as soon as I hit submit. I'm sorry PP, I feel like a jerk.

Not sure if you are serious. But apology accepted if you are. Just meant that she went to the best tech schools on both coasts. That's very impressive, not just for a transgendered person but for anyone.

Yes, I am being totally serious. I felt like some of the previous posts on this thread were really offensive, and I jumped on you for no reason, I guess because there was no context and I assumed the worst and feared others would jump on it and start hurling insults. I agree with you that her degrees are really quite impressive.

Suising probably already KNEW how Korean spas operate...Spa world is no different from other spas in other parts of the country...

So no, I would not have a problem with my daughter being naked with a trans person of either gender, or being naked myself with a person of either gender. The point of discomfort would be the appropriate behaviour of the person in question, not which gender or genetalia they might happen to possess.

As a Chinese-American and a marathon runner, Suising frequently attends spas and is well-versed in the Asian spa culture of communal bathing pools.

“Korean spas, with communal baths, are the best, as they have warm/hot Jacuzzis and cold baths,” she said. “ As a marathon runner, going into a cold bath is one of the best recovery methods after a hard workout, and I often alternate between the cold and hot baths to improve circulation. I know that other athletes also like the Korean spas for this reason.”...

Suising said she was told by the spa management that five spa customers had lodged complaints about her presence. Suising said she is very tall and muscular and has very broad shoulders, which may distinguish her from natural-born females, but that otherwise her gender presentation is very feminine. “None of the complaints, as they were described to me, referenced my genitalia in any way,” she said.“I can’t believe that they would discriminate based on physical appearance. I was not doing anything but keeping to myself.”...

Suising said she is not seeking any financial compensation and does not plan to file any legal actions against the spa, but said she would like an apology, and ultimately says she wants people to know that what happened to her is a form of discrimination that needs to be addressed nationwide.

“This has happened to me a few times before in other parts of the country, and perhaps I am pushing the boundaries of this type of discrimination, but I am not purposely looking for controversy. That is not my goal. I too, think it is correct to prohibit ‘abnormal sexual behavior’ in a public place, but a transgendered person just being there, behaving appropriately like any other customer should not count as such.”...

Suising wasn't engaged in sexual activity when Spa World employees asked her to leave. "There was a woman inside of the woman's sauna, and we had many complaints about that particular person, stating there was a man inside of the woman's locker room," James Lee. Although a transgender woman using Spa World's nude areas doesn't violate the bathhouse's policy as Lee describes it, "It caught us all off-guard," he says.

According to Lee, Spa World's policy is to allow customers of any sexual orientation or gender identity. As for any future complaints regarding transgender customers, Lee says they won't be asked to leave again.

Hi, a few thoughts for 8:17 and anyone operating under the view that penis = male, vagina = female. For the 99% plus of the population that is non transgender, that is of course absolutely correct. But trans people are essentially "mentally" (i.e. in the brain) the other gender than their physical body. In the case of trans kids, like mine, this can show up pretty early in a persistent interest in trucks, rocks, GI Joes, the colors blue, grey, and brown, and all things boy. And a persistent rejection of flowers, sparkly things, dolls, the colors pink and purple, and all things girl. Or vice versa.

As a parent, you see this, and probably most here would say, "It's all good, let the kid be interested in what the kid is interested in." That's certainly what I did during the early elementary years - at first, reminding my kid from time to time "God made you a girl, honey. You don't have to wear dresses or things with flowers, but you aren't a boy, you are a girl." And later, that became "God made you a girl who feels like a boy, I understand that sweetie."

But then, limits are pushed. At a certain age, the kid figures out differences in underwear, haircuts, names and pronouns. If the kid is truly transgender (i.e. hasn't by this point reverted to his/her biological gender), any discongruence between what the kid wants in these other areas and what is happening in reality can lead to despair and depression. Go with the kid's flow, you've got a healthy happy kid. Put up a wall, you've got a scary situation on your parental hands. And onset of puberty - well, let's just say that can be a very exciting time for a trans kid, and not in a good way. So for me, it was at this next stage when I really started opening my mind to the fact that maybe this was more than a prolonged phase of tomboyish-ness.

If I had taken the strict view that penis=male and vagina=female, I am not sure where we'd be today. One can Google the stories of depression, homelessness, and suicide in trans kids and only speculate.

But today, we are here, happy and healthy and doing just fine. God, in his infinite wisdom, decides to make some people trans...I do not understand why it happens (....psssst NIH! a study here would be nice!) but I do accept it, having seen it firsthand.

Anonymous wrote:But was the transgendered woman at Spa World actually naked? Are you required to be naked there? I re-read the article, and no where does it say anyone was offended because she had a penis. She was questioned because of her broad shoulders and muscle tone.

Yes you have to be naked. I guess they stopped her before she took her clothes off.

well, a lot of people aren't that laissez-faire
I'm one of those who gets ticked off if a boychild past age 7 is in my locker room at the pool.
So what's the solution? create a separate changing room for each transgendered group, etc?

Most swimming pools have a policy against unaccompanied teens and children...is that age discrimination? Most movies don't allow preteens in R-rated movies without an adult, do anti-discrimination activists need to start demonstrations?
Spa World absolutely should not apologize, or kow-tow to this person

They are taking a beating over this on yelp.

the vast majority of people leaving comments have probably never been to spa world and have no intention of going there regardless of the trans issue. And for every comment there are probably 50 people thinking good for spa world, now i don't have to wory about seeing a penis when i go to the womens spa.
