If you didn't go to/graduate college but make 100k plus what do you do?

Yes, a hooker, but on the high end.

Came to D.C. to go to college. Scholarship ran out when my grades dropped. Tried to make up the balance by doing tricks here and there. Pretty soon it was clear to me I could make a lot more than I ever could as a liberal arts major.

Dropped out, and started escorting full time, seven days a week, travelling all over the country. I cleared over $250K tax free on even the worst years. Did that for 10 years. I was disease free and never was robbed or in any way hurt. Also found love. Decided not to push my luck. Go into the management end (yes, I was a madame or pimp or whatever you want to call me). Did that for 5 years. Cleared 300K consistently, and once almost 500K. Never arrested, decided was pushing luck. So retired. Put money into sandwich shop. Made good, but not great money. Upgraded to fast food franchise. Now own several. 7 figure salary. Happily married with 2 kids.

Life is good.

Interesting. Does DH know? Or is that how you met? Just curious.

Met him on an airplane on one of my escorting tours. Meeting and then starting a relationship with him caused me to want a more normal (and safe) life. That's when I "retired," and went into "management." We married, but I still kept "managing." The money was just too good, and at the time my DH was a mid-level associate at a law firm and partnership chances did not look good. It was hard explaining the money, but I made up an eleaborate story about how my estranged dad, unbeknownst to my mother, left me with quite a chunk of money/stocks. I quit the escorting business entirely several years later because I loved my husband and also knew I would have kids one day and did not want to do anything to hurt them. The sandwich job was a struggle, but I learned a whole new business, which I parlayed into the fast food business. By the way DH quit his partnership and is helping me run the franchises. Total bliss.

How did you get there?

I started a show. It didn't work, I quit. Waited a bit and tried again-new topic, new strategy. I hit a few bumps but promoted the hell out of it, invested $, made lots of contacts, worked hard, and doors opened.

I'm impressed! Do you do this full time? Are you solo or do you have a partner or investor?

Nothing could be more shortsighted in this day & age than just learning a skill. Jobs change/disappear constantly. The stories reported here, btw, are far and away NOT the norm. People need college degrees more and more just to get their foot in the door, get started out, etc. And they need degrees that teach them a broad range of skills and abilities - not just training for one particular job.

New poster here. Some would say that learning a solid SKILL is a good thing.

Anyhow, an old friend of mine is a dancer, and teaches, and makes nearly $150k a year.

I know an editor-in-chief of a major NYC book publishing house who never went to college at all. She started as a secretary, and she was so good at editorial meetings that she worked her way up. Back in 1995, she was making $250k a year. I can only imagine what he makes now.

And a relative was the executive assistant to a Fortune 100 company. She made $200+ a year plus bonuses. This was ten years ago, in the boom years.

Someone told me that the bartenders at one of DC's best expense account restaurants make well over $200k a year in tips from their best customers.

I'm sure I could think of more. . . . . a lot of contractors must make that much, and much of it is off the books I bet.

the mid 90s was almost 20 years ago. Assuming your "over half a million" is $600k, that means you made approximately $35k/yr. (2012-1995=17yrs. $600k/17=~$35k)

Not even close to $100k/yr.

I think PP meant they made a half million PER YEAR since '95.

Gotta agree w/the PP: that not what it says. So clearly either math or english (can't tell which) were not 1st PPs strong suit in school.

I don't think she cares since she's obviously making half a million per YEAR, just like all the real estate agents in my neighborhood. Many make well over one million a year.

Could you tell me more about court reporting? I'm very interested. Where do you go to school? How much is the school and how long? I"m thinking about a career change.

Seeing as how there are tons of college graduates with tons of loans and no job to pay them back...I would say the opposite is true. I can't wait until this college bubble bursts, then maybe people will be able to think clearly. Learn how to do something and do it well. No one gives a damn about your liberal arts degree.

Education needs to progress to a much much more focused skilled trade type training. These graduates I've interviewed know a whole bunch of nothing. These kids can hardly wipe their asses without direction. Even though we hire for business roles, i wont interview a liberal arts candidate. Only someone who has a math science background will enter my office for an interview.

Really? Wow, interesting.

You make $100K or more doing this? Even in the recession?

Yep. I had to hire help during the recession - people were out of work, home, bored, and eager to have control over SOMETHING. Plus, many of them wanted to cull belongings in preparation for moves, to make space for boarders, boomerang kids, and flat out needed to find stuff they could sell for cash.

What does it cost to have someone organize my life? Seriously.

Why would somebody pay to get them self organized. Wow

I work about 20 hours a week now. It used to be more, and I could work more, but I don't want to. I work solo. I have guest hosts and contractors as needed. But I need to maintain control of the direction, and ownership of the content. I considered a few deals, but they were not good deals. Well...they were good deals...for the other party, not me. I realized that I didn't need that type of low value offer, so I declined. However I do have sponsorships.
