I'm in IT and your friend is very unusual. With that said, I never finished my degree either. The thing about technology is that it really cannot be taught in school. You either get it or you don't, I feel bad for kids dreaming of riches sitting in computer sciences classes right now, when what they really should be doing is trying to figure out how to crack code. When we interview people we are never impressed at what school one attended or what level of graduate degree one has. By the time the technology makes it into a text book, it is obselete. The brightest engineer I know never stepped foot in a college classroom. In the world of cybersecurity he is legendary. The guy is mindfuck smart. |
| CPA, though now you need a master's to get it. |
Sorry, thought it said graduate school. I know a stock trader who didn't go to college and had made over $1 million a year. You could also be a stock broker without a degree. |
I'm studying to be one now, though I'm receiving an associate's degree through my program. It isn't an easy skill to learn!

Nothing could be more shortsighted in this day & age than just learning a skill. Jobs change/disappear constantly. The stories reported here, btw, are far and away NOT the norm. People need college degrees more and more just to get their foot in the door, get started out, etc. And they need degrees that teach them a broad range of skills and abilities - not just training for one particular job. |

Seeing as how there are tons of college graduates with tons of loans and no job to pay them back...I would say the opposite is true. I can't wait until this college bubble bursts, then maybe people will be able to think clearly. Learn how to do something and do it well. No one gives a damn about your liberal arts degree. |
Depends what you need. I don't deal with hoarders. Seriously. They have serious psychological problems I am not qualified to deal with. When I started out, I charged $30 an hour. I work with the homeowner if they want to purge a room, and on my own if they just want me to organize it. Today I did a kitchen, dining room, front hallway, and half a family room. Oh, and the hall closet as a bonus (when I got there the homeowner was stuck on a work call, so I just spent that 20 minutes and organized the coat closet even though we hadn't agreed on that). I'm charging her $75, but she is getting a discount because she's a friend of a friend, and pregnant. Her youngest stepchild is 13 and they still had sippy cups in their cabinets. She's been married for 3 years and couldn't access her wedding dishes easily. To be completely honest with you, you can get a nice college girl to come over and help you for $20 or $30 an hour. You don't need to pay my fees - I do the same things now that I did then. You just need a second person there to keep you focused on the task of organizing, and tossing out suggestions until you hear one you think will work for your lifestyle and how your brain works. |
Is your job hiring? I'm in desperate need of money. |
| TV reporter |
| Know someone who is a car dent puller and has the contracts for most of the major rental car companies in a popular tourist place. |
Education needs to progress to a much much more focused skilled trade type training. These graduates I've interviewed know a whole bunch of nothing. These kids can hardly wipe their asses without direction. Even though we hire for business roles, i wont interview a liberal arts candidate. Only someone who has a math science background will enter my office for an interview. |
You're incredibly misinformed about the court reporting field. There are many job opportunities available from the skill. -court room stenographers, obviously -working for a firm, recording and transcribing depositions -closed captioning for television, internet -working with hearing impaired students at universities |

+1. I like your description of the college bubble. It's not popular to say, but the world doesn't need more communcations majors or the like from well regarded colleges. A good mechanic, yes. |
