Situation at Subway - was I wrong?

For the people who keep saying you should be careful of what ends up in your sandwich...seriously? Have you breve been to subway? They make the sandwich with you standing right there. What are they going to add to the sandwich with you standing there watching them make it???

OP here's what I'm getting from your thread:
1. STOP using LOL.
2. This whole thing is your MIL's fault.

Seriously, you should go by that rule of thumb as often as possible (and my MIL is great). It was your MIL that kept you from getting out of the car and into the Subway before the doors were locked.

Now I'd like you to start all over in a new thread. Do not use the term LOL. Please title your thread - How my MIL ruined my son's dinner.

Carry on.

Yes, I acknowledge that I use LOL way too much! Matter of fact I'm having a really hard time not typing it at the end of the last sentence. Oh and damn MIL!!! Kidding actually, I really like and get along well with her.

Not OP, but I love this thought process. I will live my life with this mantra from here on! Thanks PP!!

I think you should not have had the girls open the store again, but I can't help but like you OP. You seem really nice. I think maybe you will become known as "Subway Lady" on DCUM. You are already well on your way to 100 posts!

Awesome, I get a title on DCUM. Yay!!

Thanks for the laugh. lol I'll give you the obnoxious comment though. Maybe I was obnoxious in insisitng they let me in. I dont think I was but I posed the question "was I wrong" because I am absolutley open to the possibility that I was. Thus, I wanted other people's opinion.

No I wasnt going to DIE without subway but I was pretty desparate. My son has training sessions that are 50 minutes from my house. The sessions are from 7:30 to 10pm. Usually I pack a dinner that he can eat on the way home since we dont get back home until 10pm. I was rushing and didnt have time yesterday so I decided to stop at subway since it's close to where he trains. So yeah, I was pretty desparate to get that subway sanchwich. We do not eat meat so other fast food places arent an option.

Typically I probably would have just kept it moving but because of the situation I really needed to get him a sandwich. When we leave his training we do pass a McDonalds on the way to the highway but none of their sandwiches would work for my son.

I wish there was a chipotle where we were, he loves that much more than subway!

It isn't the fault of the store employees that you have crap time management skills.

It's all been explained already. He was eating AFTER his training got over at 9pm. Not eating and then going to training.

So OP had a full hour to find something else? I also agree that's very late to eat. Certainly he must have had some sort of snack -- preferably a fairly substantial one -- between eating lunch and 9 pm?

Actually i have great time management skills but on that particular day I did not. Everyone is allowed to screw up once in a while. We have been doing tnis for 5 weeks now and this is the first time I didnt have food packed for him. And nope would never blame anyone for my "crap time management skills" but me.

Anonymous wrote:The only problem is that if you come in right at 8:00 or 7:58 or right before closing and take time to order then sit down to eat, it can be a good 30 minutes until you are out of the restaurant. You said you were going to do take out but once you have ordered there is nothing they can do if you change your mind.

As someone who once worked in a place where people came in right before closing then stayed 30+minutes after closing, I completely understand the girls. I didn't get paid for anything past the end of my shift and they likely don't either so basically I had to sit unpaid watching people eat and over time you start to get pretty resentful. If they don't start putting anything away until after 8:00 then they won't be closed by 8:00. Lots of stores in the mall start bringing in clothing racks etc, they start the closing process before the exact closing time.

This is true. Fast Food Nation and No Shame In My Game both offer a lot of insight into the world of working in the fast food industry. The real solution is for people to be paid for the hours they actually work, but in OP's situation I would have just gone elsewhere.

OP here. yes, but I already drive 50 minutes on the highway to get to the training so i had no desire to drive another 10 miles or so away from the training spot. It's a dark country like road (I live in the city so others may not think it's as country) when there was a subway right there on the road that takes me to the training. Again, not making excuses just explaining my thought process when it all went down.

He had a regular club soccer game that day, we got home from that at 6:30pm. He refilled his water bottle and grabbed a couple snacks (grapes, banana and a granola bar) and we headed out to his training.

Has anyone noticed I haven't used "LOL" in my last few posts? It's killing me but I think I'm a better poster because of it!

Oh and I absolutley hate him eating dinner at 9pm after his training. But I also dont want him eating dinner on the way right before. I picked what I thought was the best option out of two crappy ones.

OP: You say you got your answer and that you're open to the possibility you were wrong. What have you concluded? Most people seem to think you were wrong even if they think the store should have stayed open.

Here's my view: You were acting like an entitled jerk.

Why entitled? Because sandwich shops are not there for your convenience. You have no right to a sandwich even if it's an hour before the posted closing time. The store is there to earn a profit. They are willing to sell you a sandwich if you're willing to buy it, but they can decide to close when it's slow if they choose. The consequence to them is that they don't get to sell you or anyone else who comes along a sandwich, and may lose you as a future customer, but they don't have to open just because they're normally open at that time and you happen to have planned poorly.

Why a jerk? Because even if they employees were not acting under their manager's orders, you put your convenience ahead of theirs. They were halfway closed an locked the door, yet you insisted that they let you in and give you food even though you had an HOUR before your son's training was done. Undoubtedly you are aware of one or two vegetarian options within 25 minutes' drive that would have gotten you back in time.

Is it killing you because you're actually laughing out loud? Because nothing about this thread is funny enough to laugh out loud about. Unless you're a lunatic. You're not a lunatic, right?

OP, you did the right thing, and you should write to the manager. I'm sure the manager won't approve of the ees trying to sneak out a few minutes early. If the door says 8 PM, you should be able to place your order at 8 PM. The girls were just being lazy slackers.

7-11. Open 24 hours a day. They sell plenty of food.

Op again. I appreciate people suggesting other places to get food. I am well aware that subway is not the only place serving food on a Sunday night. However, it was the only place I was aware of that was close to where my son was training and had a non-meat option. So for me, Subway was the only feasible option in that moment.
And on 7-11 specifically I’m not sure what they have there that can suffice as a meal. Well for someone who does not eat meat, I mean. Oh and my kid does not like salad if someone was going to suggest that. LOL

Really, you can't figure that out? For future reference they have fruit (whole fresh and cut up in the fridge section), vegetables (cut up small snack sizes), hummus, cheese - all varities, milk, pretzels, pita chips, bread, bagels, muffins, juices, protein bars, protein drinks, pre-fab sandwiches, pizza, and a ton of other pre boxed food choices like cereal, etc.
