Situation at Subway - was I wrong?

Anonymous
Arrived at Subway at 7:54 and the door was locked. They close at 8pm. One family was still seated and eating and one lady was at the counter ordering a sandwich. I knocked on the door and pointed to my watch. The two girls behind the counter looked at me and shook their heads no. I banged again and pointed at my watch. Then a man walked up with 2 kids and asked me what was going on so I told him they had the door locked and were telling me they were closed even though it wasn't 8pm yet. He looked at his phone and it said 7:55 so he knocked again and held his phone up to the door. One of the young ladies rolled her eyes and came to the door. She opened the door and told us they were closed. I said "but it's not 8pm" and the guy said, "c'mon I have two hungry kids here and it's not 8pm". She she huffed a little and let us come in.

They were visibly irritated as they had already put up all the containers of fixins. I was ordering a veggie patty and the girls started discussing how the oven was already turned off, how long is it going to take to heat up, etc. So I told them not to worry about it just heat the patty in the microwave. I then told them I was not trying to be a pain but it was 7:55 when I arrived. One of the girls then said that when it's slow their manager tells them to close early, that they are supposed to do that. I do not think there was a manager there at the time.

Somehow I find it hard to believe that they are to lock the door behind closing time, especially when there are people still in the dining area eating and another person at the counter ordering. Was I wrong for insisting they let me order my sandwiches. We told the girl off the top (both me and the man with his kids) that neither of us needed to sit down and eat there, we just wanted to get our stuff and go.

Should have gone to Chipotle instead.
You may get the stinky eye, but at least you would have gotten served.

Wow, you are super entitled.

I guess you never had the joy of working in fast food as a teen. Yes, managers told us this all the time. It was standard practice as was locking the door close to closing time.

You were so obnoxious, really you were. I mean you were going to die without a sub from subway??? There was no grocery store to go to? No other fast food joint?

I don't think you did anything wrong.

They wanted to leave. BFFD. It isn't as if you arrived at 8:05.

I worked at a fast food place in the mall when I was young and when the manager wasnt there, we'd close early or tell people that machines were broken or that we were out of stuff, when it was too annoying to make it. We were lazy kids

What was obnoxious about this? I don't get it.

report this to the subway head quarters , the owner probably didn't know. Typical lazy workers.

OP, I think you were fine. If they are open until 8 pm, I take it you can walk in and get full service, without limitations, until 7:59:59. And I have worked PLENTY of jobs like this back in my day.

Demanding to be served is obnoxious, period. It doesn't make the employees right, but DEMANDING to be served was equally as offensive.

It seems to me that if the place closes at 8pm, they have to stop taking orders for sandwiches at some point before then. Five minutes doesn't seem that unreasonable to me. It would have been good customer service to take your order anyway, but they're girls working at a fast food restaruant, so they probably aren't all that invested in it.

The only problem is that if you come in right at 8:00 or 7:58 or right before closing and take time to order then sit down to eat, it can be a good 30 minutes until you are out of the restaurant. You said you were going to do take out but once you have ordered there is nothing they can do if you change your mind.

As someone who once worked in a place where people came in right before closing then stayed 30+minutes after closing, I completely understand the girls. I didn't get paid for anything past the end of my shift and they likely don't either so basically I had to sit unpaid watching people eat and over time you start to get pretty resentful. If they don't start putting anything away until after 8:00 then they won't be closed by 8:00. Lots of stores in the mall start bringing in clothing racks etc, they start the closing process before the exact closing time.

The fact that you demanded to be let inside despite an early closing may not necessarily mean that you are obnoxious. The fact that you demanded to be let in AND you are posting about this means that you are obnoxious and annoying.

Yes, I agree with this. Well put. It sort of reminds me of the people who insist on forcing themselves through metro doors, fighting their way in after the first or second "step back doors closng". I could just hear someone say "the doors really weren't closed, I mean I had a foot and my hand inside the car so technically I should have been able to get in the car"
