Why is it ok to bash Catholics?

ITA. I was raised catholic and went to catholic school, and like for you it definitely was not a positive experience in my life. If the numbers in the link are valid http://pewresearch.org/databank/dailynumber/?NumberID=494 then 10% of Americans are ex catholics. A portion of those would be due to apathy and other factors, but if it's half or 1/3 of that 10% who left due to negative experiences, you still have a large number of people and some of them will air their grievances.

I'm sympathetic to this argument. It is understandable to me (a non-catholic) because your criticism is based on thought and experience.

OP's question is totally different though. We're talking about an innocuous thread on pinched-faced blond women and SUVs turning into yet another crude stereotyping of catholics and catholic school families. We're not talking about church doctrine or pedophelia here. It's like when bigots used to snigger about jews and money. Same difference. Ugh.

I did not choose to be a Catholic. My parents did. They baptised me and sent me to Catholic school. My family has baptisims and weddings in Catholic churches. They have family over to celebrate Christmas and Easter.

Non of those are my choices. At this point it's just my family's culture.

.....and that makes bashing ok? what a gross statement.

So I guess it's OK to bash Jews that converted to Judaism since it was their choice.

Are you kidding me? Stats? Do you know how much of this stuff never gets reported? In 2010 Penn State probably had a totally clean record of child sex abuse, maybe 0%. In 2012, not so much.

Stats mean nothing here and I know details of rampant abuse.

I would say the main reason that people bash the Holy Roman Carholic Church is because it is Holy! There will always be the scoffers in the world. Truly the Church though full of sinners lines up with Jesus and is Holy. It is supposed to look different and misunderstood by the world. Most people like to demonize what they don't understand because it makes them feel better. But the truth is the Church lines up with scripture and is Holy!

Holy is a relative term, meaning nothing to people who reject it. The church is holy because it says it is.

Not impressed

There is more "my way or the highway" than in other religions -- and I am just talking about my first-hand experience as a non-Catholic who married a Catholic. I didn't have this view until I went through the intrusive pre-Cana process, met with the priest, etc.

Wow. It's actually quite the opposite. Very much inclusive and about treating each other with kindness and having a sense of community. . .it's hard to put it into words, but this is from a non-catholic who attended a catholic school, and I was one of the only non Catholics there.

Digging up a 4 year old post to say how persecuted you are because you are the only ones who follow God is the perfect example of what's wrong with the attitude of many.

Lots of groups do that -- without the rigid rules, shaming LGbtq people and sexually abusing children and covering it up at the highest levels.

Youre joking right? Seriously, you high?

Lots of religions have rules. Take, for example, orthodox judaism, islam, mormon, seventh-day adventist, jehovahs witnesses, hinduism. . . They all have rules. Countless others have rules. Secondly, molesters aren't exclusive to any race, ethnicity, or creed. They are your neighbors, uncles, teachers, "mentors," coaches, and unfortunately, have been religious leaders too. And not just catholic by any means. Do you watch or read the news???

Are you kidding us? You're basically saying that the stats exist in your mind because you know better. Apparently you and only you know the "real" facts not just about the Catholic church, but also about the other professions that PP was comparing it to, amd we should trust you that underreporting is worse in the church than elsewhere. What narcissism, and what idiocy.

Signed, not a Catholic

Congratulations! IMO this is the most fatuous, unoriginal, and illogical post on this thread.

Ugh! Thanks for the reminder to add "lapsed Catholic" to the thread about words and phrases we can't stand.
