Why is it ok to bash Catholics?

Anonymous
The SUV thread is about a certain type of woman that many people find offensive, unimaginative and subscribe to a herd mentality that all happen to be WEALTHY. There are plenty of these types in every racial and religious group.

.....and that makes bashing ok? what a gross statement.

Because you get to bash ideas and you don't get to bash people.

Many of us are very distressed by our institutional church's viewpoints on human sexuality, their lobbying on health policy, the child abuse scandal, etc etc etc. And as a Catholic woman, I am personally appalled at how the bishops are treating the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, simply because they are focusing on service to the poor as Jesus taught, rather than on politicizing issues based on Catholic dogma. As a result I will not give cash to the church; my contributions are instead going to foreign missions for the poor and the LCWR directly. However many of us are not ready to abandon our faith simply because we believe that the institutional church is misguided. We are the church too. Before you cast stones at glass houses, examine your own religion, its history, its political positions, etc. Would you bash all Jews because you disagree with AIPAC? Would you bash all Evangelicals becuase you disagree with the Family Research Council? If so, you are guilty of very narrow thinking. Catholics are not a homogenous body that thinks in tandem 100% of the time, any more than any other religious, ethic or racial group is. Please people, when you disagree with something, try to keep it civil and focused on specific actions - not on ad hominem attacks against all members of a group. It's beneath any educated adult, frankly.
.

But if you do not believe what the faith teaches, why bother calling yourself Catholic?

It's not that the Church only wants saints--Christ came for the sinners. But the Church has a creed, so why profess the creed if it is not yours? Why not start a new church, the church of fallen-away Catholics who want to do what they want to do but still feel righteous?

Faithful Catholics are, in fact, united in professing the faith. We are different races, genders, nationalities, and we have lived through centuries of disbelief, but the Catechism is what we believe.

You have free will. You can reject this faith.

17:14, why don't you start a new thread on what it means to be Catholic. This thread is on a different subject.

The Church sucks. Embrace it, and don't be such a baby.

Because life is very Catholic or Protestant. Each group looks down on the other.

Bashing of choices is OK by me. I choose to bash my husband's cousin's baby daddy who has three DUIs at the ripe old age of 22.

I agree with pp that if we were talking the same way about, say Jews or Muslims(yikes) or Chinese or Indian or whatever other such group, one would be out of line and likely bounced from the DCUM world by Jeff. But Catholics are now so mainstream, it's almost okay to bash them. Sort of like bashing a white male. No one is really offended. No one really cares. Wasn't that why when my grandfather was growing up, where Catholics were quite literally getting bashed. But Catholics are now mainstream, and such little "bashing" is either amusing, or doesn't really hurt.

Last week I was called an anti-Semite because I didn't bounce someone off DCUM. If you are a member of a group that hasn't been defamed on DCUM, you aren't a member of any interesting groups.

There wasn't "rampant" abuse in the church. The actual numbers are lower than for other professions with child contact. And the cover-up situation was identical in other fields. Sometimes worse.

Well, except for one family that seemed almost fundamentalist-conservative, wearing Amish-like clothing. Still, they were nice.

Same for Mormons. I honestly think they are bat shit crazy for their beliefs, don't understand how in the hell they can believe this crap, and therefore question their intelligence. But I have never, ever met one that I didn't like. As a stereotype, they are incredibly nice people. Except for Mitt Romney. He's an evil dude.

Please explain how Mormons are any more bat-shit crazy than any other Christian sect.

I understand your point, and I agree with you for the most part. However, Mormon beliefs are a bit crazier than most religions. It was founded by Joseph Smith, a well-known con-man in upstate NY who claimed an angel gave him gold plates in 1820, they "baptize" dead people retroactively. Oh, I almost forgot: Glenn Beck is a converted Mormon. He is bat-shit crazy, so if Mormonism attracted him, it most be the nuttiest religion out there.

Anonymous wrote:Hell would break lose on this board if something anti-Jewish or anti-black was said. Why do you continue to bash Catholics? If I made a comment that all Jewish women appear to be overweight I would be called an anti-Semite..... The SUV thread which started out funny really took an ugly and offensive turn and I am surprised that everyone thinks it is alright.

Because the catholics don't have jihad. Look what happened with the anti-muslim video. Those people going ape over it. I guess they never heard of "sticks and stones.."

I disdain all religions. They have a lot in common, they believe in superstition and have a cult leader: mohammed, jesus, joseph smith, david koresh...

Try telling that to an Irish-Catholic, an Italian-Catholic, a Polish-Catholic. These are ethnicities, at least from the perspective of these people..
