Why is it ok to bash Catholics?

Anonymous
Hell would break lose on this board if something anti-Jewish or anti-black was said. Why do you continue to bash Catholics? If I made a comment that all Jewish women appear to be overweight I would be called an anti-Semite..... The SUV thread which started out funny really took an ugly and offensive turn and I am surprised that everyone thinks it is alright.

I also find it irritating--but Catholicism is a choice you make. Your race/ethnicity isn't.

I don't understand what you got offended over in the SUV thread. My kids go to a Catholic school mentioned in the thread. There are a disproportionate number of huge black SUVs driven by mom who happen to be short and blonde. I am tall, blonde, and drive a small car. There is absolutely a group of women who fit that description. As for the comment about all the kids being white, well all the kids on the website for deChantal are white. There are plenty of hispanic Catholics but they aren't living in Bethesda! There are some very nasty anti-Catholic people on this board, esp in the Private School Forum. I didn't feel the SUV thread got nasty though.

There is something about the Catholic attitude that isn't inclusive or open and that's what I find off-putting. There is more "my way or the highway" than in other religions -- and I am just talking about my first-hand experience as a non-Catholic who married a Catholic. I didn't have this view until I went through the intrusive pre-Cana process, met with the priest, etc.

Totally agree. The need to control others and their actions turns my stomach.

I don't bash Catholics unless they claim to know the "truth" about what is okay in terms of sex. There is a Catholic poster that comes here all the time, think the woman with 9 kids. Really pisses me off given the Catholic church has ruined countless lives with rampant sexual abuse. My mom is Catholic and she would never, ever trust a Catholic priest with a boy after what happened in her hometown years ago (horrible, numerous abuses that went on for years).

And I personally know someone who became a priest in an attempt to tamper his urges - not for boys but he had sexually harrassed/bribed men for sex so had a problem.

To claim that the Catholic church has some inherent truths about sexuality is a real problem for me. You will definitely hear some bashing from me on that one. I also pray for that poster's family because for someone who has 9 kids she is sure on the internet a lot.

Oh for gosh sakes, I saw on the when is it time to back away from DCUM that someone was "offended" at the SUV thread. There was nothing anti-catholic in that thread. There was a great deal of anti thin blond women and anti black SUV.

The specific examples about catholics were discussing a very specific area. There was equal opportunity bashing of episcopalians and northern virginians, too.

I think the better question is why do you take good natured ribbing as bashing?

Quite honestly, there are a LOT of us catholics out there, in case you hadn't noticed. We are not a minority. I also don't think of us as blond, either.

Why so sensitive? Why are you unable to joke around?

Interesting. I have never met a Catholic I didn't like. 8) There are TONS of problems with the church, doctrine, and leadership, but the Catholics I've met are very down-to-earth. Well, except for one family that seemed almost fundamentalist-conservative, wearing Amish-like clothing. Still, they were nice.

Same for Mormons. I honestly think they are bat shit crazy for their beliefs, don't understand how in the hell they can believe this crap, and therefore question their intelligence. But I have never, ever met one that I didn't like. As a stereotype, they are incredibly nice people. Except for Mitt Romney. He's an evil dude.

I'm the one who probably (inadvertantly) started the "catholic/Virginia" bashing by talking about the Catholic : SUV ratio in my neighborhood and CC. I'm one of them. So....i wasn't really bashing, just poking fun.

xoxo,
Catholic, blonde, black SUV, but still no Tory Burch!

That's true in all religions that have intolerance, though. Fundamentalist Christian are very excluding and self-righteous, as an example.

I use and am not offended by the term "Catholic Mafia." I'm a member! 3rd generation Irish-Catholic. Blessed Sacrament. Visi. Gonzaga. Catholic U/Notre Dame. Columbia CC. Club Blue Lax. Big freakin SUV. The whole nine yards. Yes, much stereotyping goes on here. But many of us are walking stereotypes.

Please explain how Mormons are any more bat-shit crazy than any other Christian sect.

They're not. That wasn't the point. The point is that they are extremely nice people. I wouldn't say THAT about all other Christian sects as a stereotype. (And I was raised Catholic).

I never bash "Catholics" as a whole. I have had some harsh words for the Catholic Church (which is not the same thing, no mater what some people think), as well as some Catholics in particular (yes, you, Mr. Anal Froth).
