What have you bought that was a complete waste of money?

Thanks for that. We've been talking about adding Skylights to the bedrooms. Good to know.

Designer handbags, clothes, watches and shoes - probably $200K over the last 10 years
Vacations staying at the Ritz Carlton, Four Seasons, etc.
Bugaboo stroller - we now prefer the MacLaren
Books upon books from amazon.com, B&N, Borders - why not use the library?

For all of the money I wasted, I could be retired by now and spending more time with my baby!

Grocery bags, tie up diaper, and throw out.

Me too! Much better than the stinky diaper genie which always got my hand wet when I extended the bag. Yuck.

Phew! You all are actually making me feel better. I admit to some dumb purchases but I think I have to credit my WASP-cheap mother and grandmother for being proponents of thrift and consignment stores. I've gotten lots of great toys, clothes and gear from there. Including a Bumbo seat (which was great, for 6 weeks), a stroller and bouncy seats. Look into it!

My lawn service is $25 a cut on .25 acres.
The $700 birthday parties are hard to avoid, if you scrimp too much, it looks cheap. When you add it all up, it often is $700. Better not to have a party at all.

The Moby wrap, several breastfeeding books that I could have borrowed from the library, a bottle warmer that scalded milk,
$100 worth of Breastea/fenugreek to stimulate milk production (don't think they worked and having to take them just stressed me out), a baby massage DVD and several post-natal exercise DVDs - oh, this was just in the first two weeks after bringing baby home! The fancy diaper bag (our favorite was the free bag we got courtesy of Similac at the hospital when DD was born). A waffle iron still in its box, a breadmaker that lives on the floor of our office because we have no space in our kitchen/don't really eat bread, several kiddie videos and music that DD hates, and the expensive tricycle that DD refuses to ride/her bike helmet that she won't put on. And yes, the gym membership for my annual visit to the gym.

$150 high-tech sport shoes that I wear to grocery shop.

A bassinet.

Do consumers realize that most of the money one pays for athletic shoes goes to the celebrities who endorse them? I've read that it only costs about $12 to actually make a pair of athletic shoes.

This whole topic has been awesome -- and amusing. Thanks everyone for sharing!

On the topic of skylights in the master BR, we're another couple who HATES ours! They came with the house, and we quickly learned how loud they are during storms and how annoying it is to have light shining in the mornings. We wound up paying about $600 for shades to cover them up. Theoretically, we could use a rod to open and close the shades, but we never bother. We sleep so much better now that it's actually dark in our bedroom. Surprise!

I will add to the list countless hair and skincare products (many somewhat pricey) that I ended up tossing because I was not happy with the results.

Maxalto dining chairs slipcovered in white linen--what was I thinking?

Many dinners at fancy/hot restaurants: Cityzen, Inn at Little Washington, Maestro, etc. There are so many in DC, it is hard to remember all of them. The food is mediocre at best and ridiculously expensive. What a waste! Now for date night, birthdays, anniversaries, we only go out casual-- that way we don't feel ripped off if the food isn't the best, but we still have a nice night together.

Fancy pots and pans. $60 for a small saucier?
