What have you bought that was a complete waste of money?

Bumbo seat, Nordic Trac (in a studio apt!), Mosquito Magnet, Dr. Brown's Bottles ( use Gerber Clearview, BPA Free and $199 each),upside down tomato planter.

PP here - $1.99 each

The BIG Skip Hop Duo diaper bag, after the second baby. It's enormous. If we regularly used a side-by-side stroller that I never needed to fold up... no, it would still be too big. I used it less than five times before posting it to Craigslist.

To those who hated the Diaper Genie, what did you end up using?
Grocery bags, tie up diaper, and throw out.

Me too! Much better than the stinky diaper genie which always got my hand wet when I extended the bag. Yuck.

This is what we do as well. On kid #4 and haven't used the diaper pail in 2 years. The cashier at Safeway always gets a chuckle when I do the weekly shopping without my reusable bags. The last time he looked at me and said "Time for a refill on bags for the diapers?" Yep!

Now some of the items people have posted as a waste have been the best money we ever spent like the Phil and Ted's stroller and the Ergo carrier but here is my list:

the Didj handheld game for dd that stopped working after she used it for 22min
the "Travel System" we got with baby #1
the diaper pail
store bought cards- the last one I picked up cost $8.99!!!! WTF? I put it back and had the kids draw a picture.
"cute" shoes for work that were on sale and NEVER actually fit. Now I only buy them at Ecco. I spend more but they last for years and are always comfy.
the rowing machine
coffee at places like Starbucks- (I know it is a waste but I bought one this morning so I haven't quite gotten over this yet)

This was a great thread! I found it after a search for "Little Gym" becuase I am considering classes for our DD; I would have to agree with a lot of posters that baby gear is over rated, expensive and doesn't last long enough to feel like you get your money's worth.

We love the Bumbo; hated our papsan swing; loved a pouch carrier (now defunct but called the KangaPouch or something like that); hate the Bjorn and Beco Gemini thingy (can't figure it out); love my Teutonia stroller but it's so big and clunky it takes up 90% of the back of the SUV so we can't put anything in the car when we go out; finally got an umbrella stroller for daily outings.

Other items would include an inversion table (really? who needs to hang upside down every day and who has the ROOM to hang upside every day?); pizza cooker thingy; ice cream maker; and too many clothes and toys for DD that she's out grown or doesn't play with at this time.

What can I say, I'm a first time Mom. Wish I'd found this thread before her birth though!

Your turn -- keep it going!

Expensive video camera to record all of DD's "firsts" and cute things she does. We've never used it and take all of our videos with our iPhones.

Cheap furniture from Hechcts I just sold on CL. A big black composter from Costco-no need for a composter, all you need is a place to put a pile.

mmmm. want to sell the wood chipper?

Since this is revived and I can maybe save new moms $$$ -

Quote from a few pages (and probably about a year) ago -

"My favorite thing that I DID use for a minute but then became a waste was this bra thingy you put your boobs and just your nipples hang out so you can attach the pumps and not use your hands."

As I sat in the hospital after birthing my twins, a friend called and asked what size cheap sports bra I wore. She showed up an hour later with 2 cheap sportsbras from WalMart, a pair of scissors, and the following advice:

Try on sportsbra, figure out where nipples are, *remove sportsbra*, cut 3/4 inch slit where nipple is on each side. Insert funnel (wrong word, I know) from breastpump through slit. You now have an extremely cheap version of the fancy "handsfree pumping bras" that I don't even want to think about how much companies are charging for.

Maybe it's different with twins, but I love my Graco travelsystem "duoglider" (maybe also because I couldn't easily carry two infants in carseats, maybe because I was too lazy to pick out another stroller.)

A George Foreman grill. Used once.
A bread machine. Used once.
A yogurt making machine. Never used.
A massage table. Used once.
A fancy, expensive diaper bag.

This is a good thread.

Mosquito Magnet. Total POS.

16 different brands of sippy cups, hoping that the "right" style would entice DD to drop the bottle and drink milk from a cup. In the end, she made the transition only when she was good and ready (after age 2!), and at that point would drink milk from ANY brand of cup . . . .

I second the PP a few pages back about buying separates thinking/hoping I'd find the right thing to wear them with later. Never worked, and the random separates still have tags on them.

I will say that Freecycle is a fantastic resource for de-cluttering your house. All this stuff that feels like crap because we don't use it is actually somone else's treasure. AND they come to your house to pick it up! We've started using it liberally, and our house feels much more clean and spactious!
