Friday's "snow?"

They will definitely try to avoid bringing everyone in for just 2.25 hours or less of school that has to include lunch. That would result in a deluge of complaints from parents as it would be the worst of all worlds from a childcare perspective. In fact, I’m not even sure bus drivers could complete their elementary school morning routes before they’d have to start their high school afternoon routes in order to dismiss everyone at the standard early dismissal time of 2.5 before regular dismissal. If they have a two hour delay and then suspect an early dismissal will be warranted, they’ll pivot to a full closure.

Agreed, I think this isn't workable. They could have a delayed opening or an early closure, but not both on the same day.

Why? At that point it is too late to make alternative arrangements. Might as well wait and see if things change in the morning.

It's right on the edge of working, but it wouldn't happen. There's no chance of delay tomorrow- they'd close instead.

Monitoring the Weather.

MCPS is closely monitoring the weather forecast for Friday morning.
Current weather forecasts indicate the possibility of a wintry mix beginning earlier than expected, which may affect travel conditions for students and staff. We are checking with our county partners and continue to evaluate timing, possible road conditions, and impacts to school operations. If any changes to school schedules are needed, we will notify families and staff as soon as possible through all normal communication channels.

Here's a good use of time instead of kvetching here and getting pitchforks ready. New understanding of why ice and snow are slippery:

Abstract

The low kinetic friction between ice and numerous counterbodies is commonly attributed to an interfacial water layer, which is believed to originate from preexisting surface water or from melt water induced by high contact pressures or frictional heat. However, even the currently leading theory of frictional melting appears to defy direct experimental verification. Here we present molecular simulations of ice interfaces that reveal that ice surfaces liquefy without melting thermodynamically but predominantly by cold, displacement-driven amorphization. Despite effective self-lubrication, very small ice friction is found to require water to slip past a hydrophobic counterface—or an excess amount of water, produced by, e.g., extreme sliding velocities."

Let's keep more of the joy in snow days, if at all possible

It's not a snow day if you can't go sledding.

PG County just announced a 2 hour delay, and 5 VA counties have at least at least a 2 hour delay, so momentum is building!

Heads up for those who don't know (after today's thread on before care programs in mcps buildings): there are activities in MCPS facilities on weekends. Those activities may be cancelled or have a delayed opening.

They will make sure the activities are still on.

Parents are going to be furious either way.

I agree with PP - they will announce a delay tonight, and then at 5 a.m. will announce it is changing to closure.

If they make the correct decision on child care I assure you that they won't need to apologize like they did yesterday.

They're leaning towards a 2hr delay, not a closure and not an early dismissal (schools HATE early dismissal, it messes everything up).

Bet we have a 2hr delay.
