I've never had an early release for any of my 3 kids aged 11, 9 and 6 and I've lived in dc for 12 years. Does that actually happen? I feel like it would be so complicated especially knowing MCPS and DCPS. What if some parents just don't come pick their children up or don't realize they are supposed to?

Moco last year had an early release for quite a bit of rain, same with PG county I believe

I'm in PG County, but we had one a year or two ago for predicted high winds in the afternoon. IIRC, most of the surrounding counties had an early release, as well.

MCPS has definitely done it recently. I looked at my emails and it happened in January 2024. It might have happened other times, and I didn't keep or can't find the email.

lol welcome to MCPS, where we never actually know what’s happening until about 5 min beforehand.

They will definitely try to avoid bringing everyone in for just 2.25 hours or less of school that has to include lunch. That would result in a deluge of complaints from parents as it would be the worst of all worlds from a childcare perspective. In fact, I’m not even sure bus drivers could complete their elementary school morning routes before they’d have to start their high school afternoon routes in order to dismiss everyone at the standard early dismissal time of 2.5 before regular dismissal. If they have a two hour delay and then suspect an early dismissal will be warranted, they’ll pivot to a full closure.

This is my 13th consecutive year as an MCPS parent. We don’t have a weather-related early release every year, but it’s happened multiple times. In early February of 2016 we had the storm that resulted in 30” of snow. The kids were sent home early and schools were closed for more than a week until they could clear all the snow.

True but mcps tends to avoid closure. No matter what, parents will be upset

I wouldn’t wish MCPS and its delay/closure drama on my worst enemy

Wish Mcps would just announce something by 10/11 pm before everyone sleeps

It's happened once for us in MCPS. They don't like to do it because then sometimes parents can't pick their kids up. But they haven't ever done a late arrival and then an early release, at least as far as I have been in the school system. If they are considering that, they'll just close for the day.

Avoid closure? No they don't. They love to close when a delay would be more than enough.
