Too early to talk about Tuesday weather

That would leave more wiggle room for snow days without impacting the summer vacation.

I agree with this. Accommodating days off for Yom Kippur and opened MCPS up to claims of favoritism and inequality and now MCPS is taking off on Diwali to avoid criticism from Indian families. There’s no way to have off on every single community’s holidays. So stick to the federal and state-mandated ones and give people religious leave for the rest.

No there is zero reason Public schools close for Christian holidays.

Absolutely no. If you close for Christmas, they close for Yom Kippur. Or Diwali or whatever but it's absurd we close a week at Christmas and Easter.

And a month worth of crap in school teaching elementary school students to color christmas trees.

Well, the "Christian holidays" of Christmas and Easter are federal and state holidays, so we have to close for them.

The Jewish and Hindu communities are welcome to lobby the federal and state government to make their holidays federal and state holidays if they'd like. But until then, no.

We don’t have to close for federal holidays. We have school on Columbus/Indigenous Peoples Day, Veterans Day, Flag Day.

The simple answer to that is it's going to rain, no snow.

Not in Damascus

Delay at least given the timing.

That's why I also said state holidays. Christmas is both a federal and state of MD holiday.

Strangely, Easter is not a state holiday: https://sos.maryland.gov/pages/state-holidays.aspx

Although I see so many stating that schools being closed on Easter Monday is a state law requirement....so not sure where that nugget of legalese is buried that carves out Easter Monday but it's not because it's a state holiday.

Both things are true: Easter is not a state holiday in MD, but MD statute requires public schools to close from Good Friday through the Monday after Easter.

Thank you. Kind of seems like this code should align with state holidays, rather than being embedded in this code.

Especially since this code hasn't been updated since 2010.

Won't affect school but it looks like we are supposed to get a few inches Friday into Saturday.

I think teacher demographics have changed. Our school doesn’t have that many Jewish teachers

The Christmas celebrations are inappropriate. Our music program only does Christmas songs and wants the kids to buy hats.

The issue with the Jewish holidays are that the teachers want off reasonably and there are not enough subs.

+1. It's an easy call for a delay.

No schools close for Ramadan but there are 2 Eids that schools maybe closed on. If the 180 calendar day requirement is dropped and there is only the 1080 (1170HS) hours required they can have that all, still start no earlier then the last week of August and still end the 2nd week of June.

You left out other religious groups. Do Buddhists have any holidays? What about those days off? Others?
Anonymous
MCPS has. A lot of Jewish families and staff. If we have a sizable population of other religions then yes we should accommodate them too. I haven’t seen reporting that we have a lot of Buddhist families.

At least 2 hr delay.
