Too early to talk about Tuesday weather

The state requires Good Friday and Easter Monday to be off.

Fine. Long weekend. No need for entire week off.

And yes, I recognize that that would prioritize the Christian holidays based on Federal holidays, but that is better than allowing for EVERY religion to need their own holidays off. It will never end as so many religions are followed here.

That would leave more wiggle room for snow days without impacting the summer vacation.

I agree with this. Accommodating days off for Yom Kippur and opened MCPS up to claims of favoritism and inequality and now MCPS is taking off on Diwali to avoid criticism from Indian families. There’s no way to have off on every single community’s holidays. So stick to the federal and state-mandated ones and give people religious leave for the rest.

No there is zero reason Public schools close for Christian holidays.

Absolutely no. If you close for Christmas, they close for Yom Kippur. Or Diwali or whatever but it's absurd we close a week at Christmas and Easter.

And a month worth of crap in school teaching elementary school students to color christmas trees.

The Christmas celebrations are inappropriate. Our music program only does Christmas songs and wants the kids to buy hats.

The issue with the Jewish holidays are that the teachers want off reasonably and there are not enough subs.

I would absolutely love a one week mid winter break in February. Allows the kids the catch up on college applications, school work and just rest or take a quick vacay.

Go ahead.

I would love that, even a five day weekend is a good compromise. Going 3 months mid year with only 3-day weekends is difficult. This year we got lucky with Lunar New Year but most years it's only President's Day in April. We don't need September 11 or April 21 off next year. Those days off should be in February.
Changing the law can get the year to go August 31-June 16 or August 25-June 10.

September 11 is Rosh Hashana next year.

It begins at sundown that day. No need for a day off from school.

This! I put on my survey that we don't need to 11th off since Rosh Hashanah doesn't start until the evening.

People requested to have it off to "prep" for evening.
The students aren't prepping. As for teachers they can prep on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday evenings.

There should be a week off for spring break as it's bad enough to go January-March without a break but January-May would be INSANE! That said it does not have to be near Easter. If spring break was April 12-16 after the 3rd MP ends that would be good. That said if it's near Easter it should be the week after unless Easter is super late!

It would actually help with airfare if Spring Break wasn’t always around Easter. I think the bigger issue is the state requires both the Friday and Monday off so it makes sense to plan around it (though I wish they wouldn’t). I wonder if anyone has petitioned to the State to not require Easter Monday?

Aww, does it mean you have to actually do your job as a parent rather than rely on schools to do it for you? So precious.

Looking for a reason to use the word precious? Poster said nothing about kids?

I'd prefer they not require Good Friday, so they could remove GF or both from required days off but if they only remove EM all the schools will hold spring break the week before Easter to capture GF. Spring break should be secular or after Easter, not before unless it coincides with the secular time.

Can we get back to the actual topic of Tuesday's weather?

The simple answer to that is it's going to rain, no snow.

Can we fight over how big the county is instead, and debate having multiple zones for weather closures?

That won’t work because some kids don’t attend the school they’re zoned for. The neighborhood they live in and the neighborhood they attend school in could fall in different zones.

Can you imagine how crazy things would get if each of the new 6 high school regions were also weather zones? OMG. That would be insane- upcounty would have more days off, but how about make-ups? If we are one county I think we need to have one weather announcement. Though, I would be fully in favor of the State changing the requirement mandating county school boards- our county is waaaaaaayyyy too big.

Also, special ed programs get bussed all over. Not sure how that would work.
