Too early to talk about Tuesday weather

Staff might be on their way to other jobs, college classes etc.

At the same time they’re being paid by McPS parents to provide before care?

Hello, two hour delay means a shift in schedule that might not work for them.

That's already something we have to live with due to causes unrelated to weather.

The problem is the bus drivers have little experience/training with icy conditions, so it makes it dangerous if even a few routes are ucy.

Buses are sufficiently heavy that they do comparatively well in slick conditions. It mostly comes down to driving slower, which doesn't require special training.

What? everyone just had a bunch of time off. There is 0 reason to cancel "early" for this type of storm. Could be nothing/minor inconvenience/or even a boom, but they can wait until morning to see how it pans out.

There are THREE 5 day weeks in Dec without a day off. Not even an early dismissal or late opening on Dec 8th in a majrity Latino county school district.

And what does that have to do with what I posted? There's no reason to cancel early - just wait until the morning.

No one knows what YOU posted. anonymous

see the thread feature - I'm responding to the the tread in which I posted.

Then the provider could cancel if they don't have the staff. In practice, though, that doesn't end up being a problem. This is just a problem of Taylor's making.

Yeah I don’t get why no childcare. High school starts at 7:45 normally, so bus service/travel for those kids on a 2-hr delay is happening around 9-9:45, in some cases even earlier. Elementary childcare providers usually open at 7, right? Why couldn’t they open at 9 when ES will not open until 11:25/11:50? I’m sorry but morning childcare is a 2-hr a day job, I don’t think most people are commuting huge distances to a job that usually starts at 7am and lasts 2 hours. They would typically live somewhat close by. Usually Taylor closes childcare so that emergency crews can clear parking lots and they would prioritize high schools first and the theory is that the elementary lots wouldn’t be clear for childcare families yet. But in a case like today where 95 percent of the county is just raining, they could triage their staff and equipment to the area of the county impacted and wouldn’t need to worry about down county elementary lots or liability.

So we’re sure they cancelled all befofe care? I remember last year Global would close but KAH would be open. I came here to check if all providers got the same message. And if it’s an MCPS directive, why aren’t they the ones communicating the message?

I wonder if MCPS is leaning towards closure and that’s why they closed before care. My HS kid will be walking to the bus stop when I would drop off my ES kid at Global. So it doesn’t make sense to close.

The Northwood kids have to catch their busses even earlier due to their earlier schedule at the holding school.

KAH told us that MCPS said they could not open.

It’s not irrational. They are avoiding liability. With COSAs and the rules about unhoused students plus the already complicated regional/countywide program transportation nothing is clear cut in MCPS. And what about staff? Most MCPS staff don’t live in MoCO because they can’t afford to. If they can’t safely get to school there’s nobody to drive the bus or turn the lights in let alone teach.

Coming back to share exactly what Global said to parents:

“We originally anticipated remaining open, but MCPS has confirmed that morning childcare programs must follow the school system’s closure.”

The system isn’t closed! It’s delayed!

The liability argument would be plausible if not for all of the districts in the US that take a more measured approach without running into liability problems.

This is absolutely just an F-you from Taylor to parents in Montgomery County. He's pissed at how he's been treated and now he's burning bridges on his way out.

The text I got from MCPS said morning childcare was cancelled.

Can Taylor sit in on an elementary school science class? He doesn't seem to understand the concept of a freezing/melting point.

It's already 34F upcounty. The rain is staying as liquid. They never thought they were going to close.
