Too early to talk about Tuesday weather

No more virtual days anymore.
They need to bring back virtual days until the makeup day law is changed. Ending school the week of June 22 with an August 17 teacher report day makes summer very short for teachers. Summer 2024 went Friday, June 14-Sunday, August 18 for teachers (9 weeks). A June 22 or 23, 2026 last day along with an August 17 report day leaves less than 8 weeks.

Virtual is never ever coming back

Why can’t they build in the days like Fairfax county? Every year it’s like this.

We used to have more extra days built into the calendar. When my first was in kindergarten, we had 184 days scheduled, but since then we’ve added extra non instructional days (most recently the transition day and the day before Thanksgiving), so here we are. MCPS pleases no one by trying to please everyone. To give each constituency the days off they want and honor staff contracts, while meeting the requirement of 180 instructional days, we get one single built in snow day.

This is my family’s last year in MCPS. I’m cool with snow days because seniors don’t have to make up days tacked onto the end of the year. I feel for families with elementary school students, though. They’re the ones who take the brunt of it.

Why don't they?

Because they've already graduated before then.

They’ve already graduated. Their last day is in May.

Lady, no one wants virtual days! Bring back the Larry Hogan mandate (Labor Day and June 15th end) that's a true and proper summer.
It is a real summer but with 180 days required it means hardly any days off. If they have an hours only requirement they could absolutely do it! Possibly add a 3rd break or a half size break (5-day weekend) midway between the two current breaks.

Well then summer is getting too short between religious off days and snow makeups.

One network tends to overestimate snow predictions. Maybe to give mcps parents a chance to start threads to discuss their meterilogist. Why not mention Amelia, and Lauren? Weather dot com says rain.

If you click on Monday it says 1-3 inches of snow Monday night into Tuesday morning. Then just rain Tuesday.

As usual, timing will be the problem. Coldest temps are at 5-8am so more likely to having freezing.

Ok, Doug and team. You're reminding families to plan on a late opening. Start planning now, parents.

Can someone start a petition to go to the Maryland Governor or state assembly that school days can be counted by the number of hours instead of days?

I would absolutely love a one week mid winter break in February. Allows the kids the catch up on college applications, school work and just rest or take a quick vacay.

Then that's probably a delay on Tuesday. That's easy for MCPS because it does not have to be made up.

I teach in MCPS.

I don’t need summer to be longer, but better planning around weather would help everyone.

We know that this area gets weather that may impact some neighborhoods and no others. We also know that many teachers cannot afford to live in the county at all and commute from far flung places. When we make the calendar, we need to plan ahead for MP3. Maybe that means a longer school year 185 days for kids.

I think MCPS needs to drop all non-required religious holidays and just allow those celebrating to have religious leave. And yes, I recognize that that would prioritize the Christian holidays based on Federal holidays, but that is better than allowing for EVERY religion to need their own holidays off. It will never end as so many religions are followed here.

That would leave more wiggle room for snow days without impacting the summer vacation.

I would love to see them plan for 185 days and then give back any they don't use to end the year earlier.

Summer is getting WAY TOO SHORT! Less than two months off is UNACCEPTABLE!
