What's his test scores? Is he a B student because he's a slacker, and may find himself in college, or is he a B student because he may be reasonably hard-working but with some special needs or is just not the sharpest tool in the shed? For the former, GMU/JMU seems like a better place, maybe CNU as well. For the latter, Longwood.

OP here. They're a B student because of multiple Learning Disabilities that are well documented by an IEP. They work incredibly hard but the FCPS 70/30 grading policy has presented challenges this year. We will be looking at a solid B GPA when applying next year and kid wants a traditional college experience away from NOVA - so ruling out GMU, Marymount and NVCC. Kid also doesn't want emo/artsy schools so smaller liberal arts with quirky kids won't be up their alley.

I have questions! LOL. What are the emo/artsy schools you are avoiding? Why the disdain for the quirky people out there? They will be at every university and workplace for the rest of your DC's life. Better to learn to coexist now rather than struggle later.

+1 Intolerance is not a good look.

Are you the posters who just tore Liberty apart? Interesting lack of self-awareness you have.

DP.
Liberty is a joke school that uses fiction instead of textbooks. That alone positions it at least one rung below even open access schools like GMU.

Lol, your insecurity is on full display. The funny part is that I don't think the JMU people care!

I’ve noticed that the people braying about “intolerance” when someone says they don’t want a quirky/artsy school, are invariably the rudest posters when it comes to popular, mainstream schools like JMU. So predictable.

“Open access”? My goodness, the chip on your shoulder must be visible from space. Are you the incredibly defensive poster with the “quirky” kid?

Nope. Just not feeling very motivated to help your mean kid who can’t associate with classmates with different perspectives.

For all you know posters speaking about JMU could have kids at WASP+ schools. Suffice it to say, insecurity or jealousy is likely not part of the equation.

JMU, CNU and Loyola MD would all seem to fit the desired criteria.

Have you considered Elon, or is that too far/pricey?

You obviously don’t know what you’re talking about, and don’t know any Liberty or GMU graduates.

Strongly beg to differ. People who are actually secure in their own choices wouldn't bother.

Fair enough. DC thought VCU and Mary Washington students seemed too "emo". We are a quirky, literary family but DC is NOT and just wants a more mainstream college experience. Schools like Penn State, VT, JMU hold a great ton of appeal for them and is looking for similar schools for kids with lower stats. It doesn't have to be a big football school but just something "mainstream".

PP. Different strokes for different folks. Also, it's funny how our DCs can be so opposite of us. So you probably did a tour of VCU, like we did. As you were walking around, your DC was thinking these kids are too emo, mine was thinking how cool it was that everywhere were people who were like him (biracial/quirky). You said you were a quirky, literary family. My DH is a ginormous football fan and I went to UMCP which has an NCAA team for everything. Yet, here we are with our quirky kid. He would probably be appalled with my state flagship. FWIW, I second the idea of Christopher Newport.

+1 my quirky/arty/scientist DD liked W&M and UMW and hated CNU. She said it seemed like the place the sporty, popular kids from her HS would go, similar to JMU/VT. And her sports-loving brother goes to VT, hated W&M, also applied UVA and JMU and only ruled out CNU because of size.

OP. Pretty much sums it up. DC is sporty and just can't relate to the artsy, quirky types in the least and knows that as a criteria, the school shouldn't have a large segment of artsy, quirky types Like I said, schools they lean towards are VT, JMU and Penn State. I am helping them research schools with that vibe but for a B student. We also toured Univ. SC and Univ. Florida and those fit the bill but doubtful they'll get merit to bring cost down to in-state COA.

Anonymous wrote:Can someone please point me to the underrated gems in VA for an average B student with a mainstream personality (sporty, social and not nerdy/artsy--in fact, prefers to avoid anything artsy/emo etc.)? I know about VCU/Mary Washington (not interested in these). Looking for other schools. Interested in sports science, nursing, psychology etc. but also undecided.

Lynchburg. Great town. Gives good merit. And very good for health professions. Very sporty campus. Not only "athletes" but you can rent SUPs and kayaks at the student union. Small classes. Nursing program uniquely has a cadaver lab. Most don't.

Anonymous wrote:I feel like this is what Radford used to be? JMU too but it has really improved in the rankings.

Other options for state schools:

-Old Dominion U (at the beach)
-Longwood (although I find the town waaaay too creepy)

SLACs:

-Shenandoah U (has the music conservatory but also very sports science oriented)
-Roanoke College seems like it would be a good fit
-Randolph Macon, cute town and kind of the prototypical small school
-U of Lynchburg cut a ton of programs lately so IDK but that's another "B students who are happy-go-lucky people" option

LOTS of schools have cut unpopular programs, including big ones. Lburg cut programs that had only a few kids in the majors. Which lots of schools are doing.

Elon is the place for this girl. She sounds like the right type and they have nursing (and also a cadaver lab).

Elon would be good but will they award merit to bring cost down?
