Underrated gems in VA for B student

Anonymous
For merit aid for a b student, you need Slacs that are not top tier but still interested in having a well rounded student body from multiple states.

Schools like Susquehanna, Juniata, Gettysburg, and some of the Jesuit schools like the Loyolas.

You don’t know until you apply but run the net price calculator and also, see what you get offered.

I agree, no merit likely for B students (3.5 and below) at top SLACs or some OOS publics like Pitt, Penn State, Indiana, U Tennessee Knoxville, etc.

My daughter is at CNU and loves it! She had a 4.3 in hs but I know many kids who have been accepted with average grades. You have to want a smaller school but the small class size and interactions with professors have been fantastic for her. Also, the campus is gorgeous.

+1
Our neighbor's daughter was a superstar in high school and chose to attend CNU. She's now at Drexel for med school.

Everyone i know at CNU seems to love it. It holds no interest for me but then I'm one of those emo artsy types. Your kid should apply there, op. It's also known for good LD services.

A B student isn’t getting into JMU anymore.

A B student from VA public has never gotten in.

Will a B student from OOS?

I live out near Virginia Tech. SW VA actually has a bunch of unheralded small colleges. Ferrum College, Emory and Henry, Hollins University, Averett, UVA-Wise, Washington and Lee ($$), VMI, Mary Baldwin U. I've been out to Radford a few times recently. It's in a growth phase and good things seem to be happening there. Radford used to be VT's women's college. Radford has a nursing school presence in downtown Roanoke. VT's new medical school is in Roanoke along with its biomedical campus.

Well, I’ll be the one who says I actually know someone who went to CNU and wound up transferring out. I didn’t hear the whole story, but she is now at an SEC school, which was pretty shocking to me having known this girl and her parents. It just seems an odd place for a liberal Asian girl.

Agree that CNU is probably not quite right for a liberal Asian girl. It seems less diverse than average. But it’s still a nice school with all sorts of kids.

Emory & Henry just became a University a few months ago. I found it late in our search, so my daughter didn’t actually wind up applying. Looks like a nice little school, but it is quite far from … A lot.

Radford’s history is pretty interesting - normal school (basically a teacher’s college), then part of vt for a while, and eventually became a co ed university. The current prez made the deal with VT for the Radford student section at VT football games. I wish I had seen the new arts building in its completed state in person - that was a big draw for my daughter, who is a dancer. I’ve seen pics and their news spaces are just gorgeous.

I actually meant a big sec school seems an odd fit. I don’t know enough about CNU to comment on that aspect-all I know is that she went and transferred out. Maybe too small and not exciting enough?

So far, thank you for the helpful responses. We are going to look at:

Longwood
CNU
WVU

Are there any others that would be a good fit for a sporty mainstream child that are akin to JMU/Penn State/VT but more for a B profile student?

If looking for sporty, Longwood over CNU. Longwood’s sports are Division I and CNU is Division III. Longwood’s men’s basketball team has been to the NCAA tournament twice in the last three years. Super exciting to see your team on ESPN and March Madness!

Funny because my daughter who I posted about being at CNU and loving it is a liberal Asian girl . You have to want a small school to like it there. If someone transfers to an SEC school they likely wanted something different anyway.

where did your child wind up?
Still deciding. Trying to weigh the potential "loss" of ten of thousands of dollars versus getting the kid out of this house for betterment of everyone's sanity.

I feel this- Cory Kahaney the comedian actually did a funny bit on how spending 63k a year on college was worth every penny to get her daughter out of the house

Op here. We are mostly interested in VA publics. But we are open to out of state schools that give enough merit (to a B student) that will make COA comparable.

Merit dollars and B student? More of an oxymoron.

Yes, a college might provide a tuition coupon off MSRP, but it won't be based on true academic merit for a B student.

Pardon me, but you’re a glassbowl.
