Bike Lanes blamed for Hit and Run Death

The camera guy from the tv news crew actually got video of it happening while they were there. The driver in the red car in the tV story wasn’t even speeding.

There’s clearly something at fault with the road design here, because there shouldn’t be a crash every day in the same spot. Something is definitely wrong with this part of roadway.

You realize this is exactly what the biker bros mean when they refer to “traffic calming” They are making them narrower in attempt to make things safer but it actual makes roads more dangerous.

It actually makes streets safer, but go off on your bicycle-hating hobbyhorse, I guess. If you spent as much time riding a bicycle as you spend riding your bicycle-hating hobbyhorse, you might be a happier person.

I admit it, I DO occasionally want to be on a bike, just so I can have a little sociopathic fun and blow through stop signs, red lights, ride the wrong way on one way streets, ride on sidewalks, and otherwise act like a complete outlaw. In other words, be what you are literally every nanosecond you’re on a bike.

Yeah, no joke - I really do wanna get on a bike sometimes , just so I can be a jackass. 100% honest.

Yep. You can be sure he goes absolutely mental if he gets stuck behind a slower bike. I’ve seen this type of thing happen on crowded trails or the bike lane on L street. They lose their friggin minds if there is someone riding slower.

If people who live with the intersection every day are telling you there's a big problem here, maybe we should listen?

DDOT does some pretty crazy things in the name of safety, things that indisputably make streets less safe.

It seems pretty clear that the intentional road narrowing - which is DDOT's go to move - caused this. But rather than reflect upon how badly they've screwed things up the hyperventilating safety patrol is trying to crisis management this.

You are stone cold crazy.

There have been 52 fatal road accidents as of December 27, already matching the 2023 record total. Were the other 51 people also killed as a result of “intentional road narrowing”?

Odds are that you are the very same poster who tries to claim that traffic fatalities are so rare we shouldn’t worry about them.

I honestly do not care if people damage their cars because they can’t slow down enough to navigate a curb extension. I also have absolutely no doubt that road fatalities in DC would be much higher without this infrastructure.

Do tell!

Here's the number of deaths each year in DC caused by speeding drivers (per the police). Please point out when the many, many, many traffic calming measures the city has implemented started reducing traffic deaths.

2022: 9
2021: 12
2020: 15
2019: 10
2018: 9
2017: 9
2016: 8
2015: 11
2014: 12
2013: 11
2012: 5

You don’t understand the difference between correlation and causation, do you?

And you are knowingly telling a lie when you claim that these numbers represent the number of people killed by speeding drivers.

Fatal road accidents almost always have multiple causes and in an urban environment with low speed limits, speeding is almost always a factor. The numbers you are quoting do not represent the number of people killed in accidents in which speeding was a contributing factor.

I’ve read MPD investigations of fatal accidents which made no attempt to determine the speed of the vehicle at the point of impact. So even a list of fatal accidents where speeding was deemed to be a contributing factor could still be an underestimate of the number of people who were actually killed in accidents where one or more parties were speeding.

The indisputable bottom line is that if you want fewer fatal crashes, you need more drivers to obey the speed limit and to drive at speeds appropriate to the road conditions. If you want more people to die, then feel free to go ahead and tell drivers that it’s perfectly fine to speed.

It pains me to write it, but you are a shining example of how increased access to information has left society worse off. You have scraped a statistic about something you don’t understand and are willfully misrepresenting facts in furtherance of a petty obsession to alter public policy in a manner that will further endanger everyone who uses DC streets. I can think of few thinks as pitiful and reprehensible that I’ve read on this site.

In the interests of the general public, I earnestly request that you refrain from writing or saying anything further about road safety ever again.

You're the only person in Washington D.C. who is *pissed* that so few people are killed by speeding drivers.

Also, please don't misrepresent these numbers. They're the official government numbers and the category is "predominant cause of traffic fatality."

There's a whole section laying out what happened in traffic fatalities in the city. It's very interesting.

you do realize a car driven by a speeding likely drunk driver killed your neighbor? C-A-R, car. You seem totally unhinged. There is always room to investigate causes and whether more precautions could be taken but that’s far from what you are doing.

Many of us are working very hard to reduce fatalities and other accidents on DC roads. What you are doing is in direct opposition to that goal.

2022: 9
2021: 12
2020: 15
2019: 10
2018: 9
2017: 9
2016: 8
2015: 11
2014: 12
2013: 11
2012: 5
2011: 15
2010: 8

You're the only person in Washington D.C. who is *pissed* that so few people are killed by speeding drivers.

You are either a liar or an idiot.

Before you claimed that the numbers represented the “deaths each year in DC caused by speeding drivers”. No you claim that they are they represent the “predominant cause of traffic fatality”. You have the gall to accuse the PP - in the very same paragraph no less - of misrepresentation.

Many of us are working very hard to reduce fatalities and other accidents on DC roads. What you are doing is in direct opposition to that goal.

DP

I’m reporting your posts and requesting that you be banned from this forum for your constant insults to other people on this thread.

No one else here calls other posters names as you’ve been doing. The rest of us are having a civil discussion and you cannot seem to participate without insulting others.

You need to be taught a lesson.

The person obsessed with “bro bros” is actually the one interfering with civil discussion.

The camera guy from the tv news crew actually got video of it happening while they were there. The driver in the red car in the tV story wasn’t even speeding.

You don’t need a bike to be a jackass. You achieve the same objective with every single one of your posts on this forum.

+1. so transparent.
