Metropolitan DC Local Politics
| These neighbors are just ridiculous. The guy drove on the sidewalk and was drunk. |
Apparently it’s the fault of the “biker bros” and “special interests” that drivers speed so fast they cannot navigate the turn. But sure - let’s lay it down. We can just dead end C St at 16th and route all WV traffic down N Carolina. That would be the safest. |

| (and btw - everyone in the know knows exactly who posted this. We all know this isn’t about traffic safety.) |
There’s a bike lane in DC that was built as a result of a crash involving a drunk driver who was being chased by police after committing a violent felony. I think the people claiming this fatality was the road’s fault learned that play from the bike bros. |
| This is hilarious. Vision Zero lol. Does this mean that bike lanes have now killed more people than they've saved? Who would ever have thought that adding concrete barriers would cause more harm than good. |
I don't know what bike lane you are talking about but I'm skeptical the bike lane was explicitly due to the crash. More likely, the road was redesigned due to the crash and bike lanes became part of the reimagined road because the city has an official policy to incorporate multi-modal uses into road redesigns. I live near Florida Ave NE and its redesign (which isn't even that good) was in part prompted by two fatalities -- one a pedestrian and one a cyclist. Both hit by speeding, out of control drivers (I don't think either was drunk but one had just stolen the vehicle they were in). The redesign's goal is to get traffic to slow the eff down. It includes reducing lanes of traffic, widening sidewalks, adding bumpouts for bus stops, AND adding protected bike lanes. But the goal of the redesign isn't the bike lanes. It's to calm traffic overall and they just included bike lanes. The bike lanes were actually planned prior to the cyclist fatality on the road, though they may have added the protection to the bike lanes after that happened. But actually the bike lanes are not even protected the entire length of the road and I think where the fatality happened, the bike lane is still exposed. In any case that cyclist was killed because some moron who had just stolen a van blew through a red light at high speed, hit multiple cars, and careened into the cyclist. All of that could actually still happen though I think it would be harder to reach the same speed because the road is now narrower at that end. Anyway, I wonder if people think they redesigned all of Florida Ave NE to add bike lanes and sit around complaining about it. In reality, it's a dangerous road that people regularly treat like a highway and has had a ton of traffic accidents over the years due to people flying down it going 50, 60 mph and flipping cars, knocking down retaining walls on the Gallaudet campus and in people's yards, and in some cases killing people. The only reason there are not way more fatalities on Florida Ave is because those of us who live in the area have avoided walking or biking down it for years because it's terrifying and dangerous. The redesign has made it slightly more functional though I still see cars tearing down that road going too fast on the regular. Recently I've seen increased traffic enforcement at intersections, which cops actually pulling over and ticketing vehicles for running red lights or failing to yield to pedestrians when turning. So that's good. Those of you who think this is all about bike lanes and nothing more either do not live in these neighborhoods or are just too myopic to understand what it takes to actually protect people (pedestrians, cyclists, children playing yards, other drivers) from the many dangerous drivers in this region. |
Explain how the bike lane cause the fatality. Be specific. You all are awful. This man died because of a dangerous, speeding driver, who then abandoned their vehicle and ran away. And you want to blame a bike lane? Y'all need to go sit in the corner and think about how your behavior is hurtful to the other children. |
wtf? did you start drinking early? |
You mean … sidewalks? That block actually doesn’t have a protected lane as I recall. the protected lane ends at 16th. |
Sad to say, there are “neighbors” who in fact have a monomania about blaming everything on bike lanes. although they also at times veer off into other strange conspiracy theories about DDOT. They are frankly not mentally well, and the fact that they get so much air time is an unfortunate side effect of democracy. |
| The bike lanes should have concrete barriers. No way I'd ever bike on one. |
You need to take a look in the mirror. The whole idea behind the Vision Zero changes is that there is no individual fault. Everything is caused by the layout of the road. In this case the changes seemed to have caused the accident ergo Vision Zero killed that person. |
The changes did not cause the accident. The driver’s manifest lack of respect for the lives of others caused the accident. |

On what forum are the “neighbors” making this claim?
