I don't think that noncitizens should be voting, but there's no evidence that noncitizens are voting. I do think that removing citizens from the voter rolls, something that has been shown to happen as part of this "purge", with no way for them to get things corrected before the election, during the 3 months before the election when the National Voter Registration Act clearly states changes to the rolls can't be made, is wrong.

they selected "im not a us citizen" on the application

Let me say that again

THEY SELECTED "I'M NOT A US CITIZEN" ON THE APPLICATION.

Here is teh Virginia voting application:
https://www.elections.virginia.gov/media/formswarehouse/veris-voter-registration/applications/VA-NVRA-1-Voter-Registration-Application-rev-5-2024-2.pdf

Show me where there is a "I am not a US citizen" checkbox. There's not.

I'm confused too, because the news on NBC4 last night showed a form where some of them did select "not a US citizen." I think it was at the DMV maybe? I'm curious what form it was too.

I read that it was a DMV form. Given that people can change from not being a citizen to becoming one it seems like relying on old forms from the DMV would include people who are now citizens.

It also seems likely that people are going to make mistakes whether that’s checking the wrong box on the DMV form, or accidentally registering to vote because they didn’t understand the form.

If someone cannot fill out a DMV form properly and they say they are a non-citizen when they are actually a US citizen that is their problem. That is not voter disenfranchisement that is someone being stupid and incorrectly filling out a form. Removing them is 100% appropriate given that they told VA they aren’t a citizen. If they are actually a US citizen they can register using same day register on Election Day.

I could say anyone checking a box for Trump is too stupid to vote and shouldn’t be voting but I won’t.

I hope his little stint doesn’t work and the citizens get to exercise their right to vote as they should.

That's NOT what this is about and you know it. Youngkin was right and SCOTUS was right. This is a liberal website that has gone off its rockers so you think you can post any garbage you won't. Too bad. Once upon a time the mod let more voicesbe heard and back then he made money. Yes, I'm leaving. Yes you will be rude and say "Bye bye Felicia" abd other childish but I don't care. There is no reason left here.

Well, you'd be wrong. Are you able to read actual news reports, or do you always react in the usual outraged, kneejerk way? The people being purged SELF-IDENTIFIED as non-citizens. JFC.

Love it when people on DCUM are condescending and wrong.

It’s very easy to be swept up in this even if you never self-identified as a no citizen.

If you read the actual court filings by DOJ instead of lazy news reports you would know that Virginia is using partial ID matches— so anyone with similar names is being targeted for purging even if there are different birth dates and other information in the system indicating that the person is a citizen.

A PW county elections office investigated and found that every single one of the people on the list they were given who tried to vote was a citizen.

Why isn’t the news media publicizing this information so people get to vote for this election?

Beacuse it doesn't make headlines. Also, it's about 1,600 voters affected. Not great, but a pretty small amount if you think about it.

I hope the board of elections contacts them and tells htem to come in to early voting to register again.

The vast majority of that 1,600 are indeed, non-citizens and not eligible to vote. There was a handful of people who were mistakenly removed and all they have to do is go to their polling place and re-register.

You have absolutely no idea if that’s true or not. No one has gone through the list to figure this. The closest we have is one example where out 200 names 160 had never tried to vote so no one tracked down their status and the 40 who had tried to vote were all citizens.

This. And even if they weren't, federal law does not allow changes in the voter roll this close to an election. If VA needed to take this action, they needed to do it earlier. Why does the court not follow the law? That is a much bigger concern in the big picture and in establishing precedent than this particular case with a relatively small number of records that won't affect our state's outcome.

They didn’t look at the other 160, so it’s difficult to say whether that sample is representative or not.

Yet, not a single eligible person was disenfranchised.

Not one. Not even ONE.

Eligible voters can register SAME DAY in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and cast a provisional ballot.

Please explain how anyone has been disenfranchised (hint: they haven’t).

This is a stupid argument. Should we make everyone in Virginia vote by provisional ballots so Youngkin can have a headline that he is ensuring ballot security?

This is horrific
It sets the stage for more Republican cheating

It’s only 1600 votes however we are screwed that they took this now ugh

It is zero votes. In VA you can register the day of the election. If you are one of these 1600 people and you find you are not registered when you go to vote, if you are a citizen you register right then. You do not have to prove you are a citizen, you just have to affirm.

What is stupid is you’re dodging the question, and thinking no one would notice.

Nearly all of the 1,600 people at issue in this thread appear to have been correctly identified as noncitizens.

But not just any noncitizens, these 1,600 (let’s call it 1,500 for the sake of argument), REGISTERED. Ie they registered to vote.

It does not matter whether this 1,500 actually voted or not:

- To register to vote, you must swear you’re a citizen under penalty of criminal prosecution. (Brennan center).

Let’s prosecute them. All 1,500 of them. These are criminals under our law.

I’m not dodging the question. You are right that of someone fills out the voter registration form they can also vote a provisional ballot but why should they be required to do that when the rate of false positives is so high (verging on 100%) and Congress explicitly told the state to stop doing this 90 days before an election? It’s all so Youngkin can grandstand and he can eff himself.

Nearly all of the 1,600 self-identified noncitizens turned out to be: noncitizens.

The minuscule number of U.S. citizens among the 1,600 received full notification by mail: SENT TO THEIR LEGAL ADDRESSES OF RECORD. NPR lied when they claimed notices were “sent to the wrong address.” Everyone is legally required to change their drivers license if they move. There were no “wrong addresses,” only legally-invalid addresses.

But you still won’t answer the question:

- how has anyone been disenfranchised here? They can register and cast provisional ballots on Election Day. Problem solved!

I literally said “you are right that…”. I’m also explained why it’s a crappy outcome to rely on same day voter registration to fix this.

Now why won’t you admit that there is no evidence or reason to believe that the 8 people they’ve already found to be citizens in the 1600 are the only citizens in that pile. Chances are it’s anywhere from 400 to 1200 or more but no one knows because no one does any due diligence or checking.

And why don’t they give people more than 14 days so at least the mail gets to them when they move (oh, because it’s their legal address 🙄)
