I don't know what your problem is except that your kid was clearly too dumb to start school at the correct age. I have a fourth grader with a summer birthday (youngest in her class) who just turned 9. Her bestie has always been the oldest girl in the class - she has an Oct 3rd birthday so is starting 4th at 9 but will turn 10 in a month and half. Now there are boys who were held back a year, and some of them will have turned 10 over the summer, but that's unusual because those boys were immature, not smart, or short. |
I didn’t even put in the time for heavy traffic. That’s exactly why I’m trying to figure out what hours these people are working. |
OMG, you are saying the same thing as everyone else. Kids turn 10 in 4th grade. They will all start 4th grade when they are 9 years old. Probably 75% of them will turn 10 over the course of the year (for whatever reason, my kids' friends almost all have spring birthdays, so they will turn 10 at the end of the school year). The other 25% will turn 10 between mid-June and September 30th. There's always one of two "big boys" as my girls' call them who are a year older than the kids with summer birthdays. those are the only kids who will start 4th at 10 years old. |
A lot of us chose to live near where we work. I have a 15 minute commute. I'm home by 5:30. |
10:00 to 8:00 is enough sleep. Many kids need or naturally want to wake earlier and if that's your kid then you're right 10:00 is too late. But Fairfax county doesnt start elementary school until 9:10. So many kids don't wake until 8:00 or even later. I'm a parent with a 4th grader who has sports practices until 9:00 and I was initially freaking out about it becauseI also believed all kids should be asleep by 8:30 or something like that, but its been OK. And actually kind of nice to have the flexibility to do things later. |
I work roughly 8:00 to 4:00. Commute home and be there by 5:00. On days I work from home I'll log extra time since I'm not commuting. Occasionally, though not regularly, log back on after dinner. |
It takes more than 15 minutes to go five feet inside of Tysons Corner, Merrifield, anywhere in Fairfax County these days. |
| My almost 10-year-old fourth grader goes to bed at 9:30 pm and is up by 7 am. |
I drive from Falls Church to Arlington. It takes me 15 minutes. Again, DH and I prioritized finding housing near where we worked. Is it a big fancy modern farmhouse McMansion? Nope. Does living close to work make our lives so much better and allow to spend time with our children? Yes, and I wouldn't have it any other way. |
I agree 10pm to 8am is enough sleep if your child actually falls asleep by 10 (not just in bed) and actually sleeps until 8am. We didn't have that luxury in 4th grade because school started at 7:30am and kids needed to by dropped off by 7:20am. Thankfully we lived close to the school. But for my kids to get 10 hours, waking up at 6:30am, they needed to be asleep by 8:30pm, and they were. |
1. Crock pot meals. 2. Batch cook over the weekend & eat leftovers during the week. 3. Quick meals some nights like soup, bagged salad, & sandwiches. |
| 7:45 lights out. Now 6th grade and 830 bedtime. Up for school at 6:45, home from school 3:45, homework and instrument practice, dinner, swim or tennis 6:30 to 8, quick shower and snack, lights out. |
|
Our kids K-5th go do their rooms at 7 pm. They have nice book lights on each bed and they read/color/do puzzles for an hour or so. 4th grader is lights out at 8:30 pm.
Caveat: I only work part time and their dinner is at 6 pm. They also wake up around 5:30 am. |
Mine walk to school at 9:05. They are up by 6:45 so we have lots of time to kill in the morning. |
I wouldn't allow my kid to stay that late. When he was 8 swim team would go 5-630. We left at 6p to get home, eat, do homework, then bed. Always in bed by 8. Now he's 9 and lights out at 9, in bed by 830 to read, shower at 8. Dinner is around 630 every night. We are very regular. |
