In-state UVA or UMich no merit ?

Not me. If I was in-state and that was the major/area of interest, it would be UVA in a heartbeat. Plus, it’s only a 2 hour pretty drive down route 29 through the wineries and foothills. Your kid will always have a ride too.

Not worth the premium for UMich. Save the money for grad school.

International relations/government/politics leaning

Also got into Georgetown.

But 85k to $35k hard pill to swallow

But Georgetown is barely more expensive than Michigan. Georgetown vs. UVA in-state is a pick ‘em. Michigan is a distant third.

That’s how we are leaning.

Georgetown was first choice, but so close to home and so much more $$$$$$—esp for undergrad.

I never looked at it that way, but I see your point. Michigan is the clear winner with that perspective.

This choice is evolving as an economic one. People who can afford it go with Michigan, & those who can’t afford it go with the bargain basement option.

I love that you consider uva to be bargain basement. Gee do you have an axe to grind?

OP there are a lot of UVA haters on this board as you can see. For those potential majors, there is absolutely no reason to pay a premium for an out-of-state school if they’re already into UVA. Anyone with a brain knows this.

My DS is a foreign affairs major and he would have loved to go to Georgetown but the cost was prohibitive so he didn’t even apply. Applied ED to UVA and was done.

Start another thread then. Because that’s not the subject of this one.

Yeah, it is.

FFS for a measly 2 points in National rankings—22 vs 24 —you are going to pay $70k+ year vs 28k for Michigan. We have the $$ and no way. I might for Georgetown, give the major…but Michigan? You are on crack.

Only VA kids that don’t get into UVA go to Michigan (unless it’s a family tradition). That’s the facts. UMich is a back up to UVA in VA.

They both are very good schools, but only one is elite academically. You can’t be mediocre in STEM and be considered elite, unless you’re a niche school. UVA is not one of those.

UVA is mediocre in STEM?

No it’s not, that’s just Va tech boosters who feel that they have a stronger emphasis in stem.

OP’s degree area is a strength of UVA and the DMV. The major is probably pre-law preparation. UVA has the best law school of the bunch. This is a no-brainer - UVA.
