Censoring pro-palestine speech

I believe his approval rating now is at 37%. He's a war mongering, genocidal, racist. I hate this man. I cannot bring myself to vote for him. It really is a decision of two evils. At this point, I may be stuck voting for Marianne Williamson. That's really all we've got.

Which would mean making a GOP victory more likely. So screw you.

Um, screw you for funding the mass murder of innocent civilians? I will not vote Biden and most of the Ds I know have said the same. Almost everyone that I know in the Arab and Muslim communities cannot stomach the idea. My DH said he will sit out. I will vote Williamson unless there is a more viable alternative between now and November.

My Israeli friends are afraid of flying the flag of Israel. I have not seen any Israeli flags in our progressive neighborhood. None.
Israel went through a major tragedy, it was attacked with unimaginable cruelty, and instead of showing support, the public is victim blaming and supporting the country where terrorists came from.

And my Muslim friends (including ones who are not Palestinian) are afraid of talking over the phone about how the conflict is impacting them and their families because they are afraid law enforcement are monitoring their conversations. They think that just expressing sadness for the Palestinians killed in this conflict might be enough for the FBI to come knocking on their doors. They are truly afraid.

In our progressive town there are lawn signs in support of Israel. And “kidnapped” signs hung up in public spaces. Zero sign of Palestinian support (and Palestinian support does not equal support of the Hamas attacks)

This situation is sad for everyone. 5x the number of Israelis. Support for a ceasefire does NOT equal antisemitism.

Are you seriously saying you have a problem with the kidnapped signs?

The intent of many of the signs is to stir anti-Arab and anti-Muslim hate by pro-apartheid groups. For example, many of the signs in NYC are positioned outside Palestinian restaurants, Arab centers, or similar and nowhere else in the neighborhood. This way, if someone takes them down, you can be charged with anti-semitism when really the locations were primed specifically to blame the local Arab communities.

Plus, what are the signs going to do? Is someone going to recognize a face and call Hamas? The intent is to create hatred for a certain group. But that is acceptable because as long as you hate Muslims and Arabs, there are no repercussions. No laws against that.

People are getting fired for simply taking down signs (that btw are often illegally posted in public spaces, I was fined years ago $150 for putting up a sublet notice in a public space in NYC, I imagine other locals have ordinances about taping signs to utility poles and outside buildings.

No. This is so offensive.

The point of the signs is to MOURN KIDNAPPED PEOPLE.

I initially thought that very thing until I saw that they had been posted en masse outside of Arab institutions. I then realized that it was to disseminate hate.

I’m telling you that I am Jewish and have seen NONE of that sentiment in my community.

Do you recognize that Israel's existence was predicated on the murder of thousands and displacement of millions? Why can no pro-Israel folks admit that? Its bad to kill thousands of people. If you can get Israel to remove illegal occupations, prosecute settler violence, promote equal rights for Palestinians, and end the dehumanization of the Arab population then I would gladly vote to continue sending aid. The current government is genocidal. Ben Gvir is putting forth legislation to allow IDF officers to open live fire during protests held by Palestinian citizens. Legal slaughter. It's inhuman. I do not want $6B annually in my tax money going to that regime.

When people discuss Jewish hate crimes without understanding that Palestinians and others from the Middle East are fearful for reporting anti Muslim hate crimes due to the way they were treated after 911, it makes me think they need to open their hearts to understanding.

This is a horrific situation for all.

Would you be calling for a ceasefire on the US if Hamas came and raided your homes, snatched your children, raped your family members, and murdered your family right before you very eyes? No. You'd be standing in the street waving the US flag saying bomb the crap out of those monsters like we all did after our country was attacked on 9/11. So why can't Israel defend itself like very other country? oh right--because they somehow deserved it. got it.

OK. I can have an open mind and believe that some people posted the signs with the intent to mourn together. But, I these signs have been like waving a red flag in front of others (remember, the numbers, Palestinian deaths greatly outnumber Israelis & by posting only the kidnapped signs there is an underlying message - intended or not - that only Israelis deserve to be mourned)? And when in reaction, a person simply removes a sign, they get fired from their jobs? Something feels really unbalanced and off to me. Can you try to have an open mind as well?

No. no one "deserved it". Period.

A Palestinian child in Gaza does not deserve to be killed either. Period.

It never works that way. The pro-Israel crowd is not required to be open minded or balanced. they are allowed to call for and carry out mass extermination. But if you call it out or oppose YOU are the antisemetic, YOU are racist, YOU are a bigot.

You can put these signs up in front of a Palestinian restaurant, mosque, HR organization, etc. to provoke a reaction BUT if you do react to the provocation, you're doxxed. The one-sidedness of all this is infuriating. And it is so obvious.

status quo ante seems unacceptable to Israel. Kind of understand that — not wanting to live next to a place governed by a hyper-militarized death cult Hamas.

Amazing that you're invoking the Iraq War. You know, the 20 year war that killed thousands of civilians, costs billions of dollars, got us absolutely nowhere and was enabled under the knowingly faulty premise of WMDs. Oh, and the one that caused anti-war protests that thousands - like yourself - tried to silence? We have learned absolutely nothing. Plus, bombing Gaza is nothing like Iraq. You're all for shooting rounds into a fishbowl

This post demonstrates the problem perfectly.

IMO, the above is not "expressing sympathy for the Palestinians", it is 100% blaming Israel for its very existence (and everything else that's happened since).

I'm not suggesting it be censored, but this (and even worse) is what lurks below many of the seemingly innocuous "sympathy for Palestinians" comments.

You know nothing about the founding of Israel. Stop blabbering about things you’re ignorant about.

This. Also, read the article “the Israel Lobby”.

I mean look at America. Look at it. Off the bat, we are comprised of a county of basically 1/3 Evangelicals. These folks claim to love Israel, but they do it basically from a self-serving biblical perspective: God shines on Israel and also there needs to be an Israel as part of end time prophecy, and supposedly all the Jews are supposed to convert etc. So really they don’t care about Israel, but it’s a sort of symbiotic relationship.

So there’s that support.

I love my Jewish friends. I reached out and checked in with many of them recently letting them know I support them.

At the same time, you can’t ignore that like 800,000 Palestinians were forced off their land in like 1948 or whatever to make room for Israel. The Us and England basically had a huge hand in this.

And now Israel has basically cordoned off all these Palestinians into walled ghettos. And now they’re gonna take North Gaza and keep it and probably let Orthodox settlers annex it with all the other land that’s slowly but surely been annexed over the decades by settlers.

I look at Facebook and basically a lot of propose are like “if you’re silent and don’t speak up for me you’re complicit!!!”

I don’t agree with that. I can both be outraged at the hostage taking and killings, but also about Israel’s batsht crazy haredim led governmentx, it’s history of oppression of Palestinians, and that is probably seizing this opportunity to take more land and not give it back.

So no. I will decry both sides, but still support my US Jewish friends. I won’t be cowed into silence because it’s no PC to talk about both sides or whatever silencing techniques are being employed. its kind of crazy seeing donors taking away endorsements to their Alma matar colleges and what have you as well. Free speech is uncomfortable. Obviously, racism and real anti-dentist is terrible. But just looking at both sides objectively is not.

DP.

I could not disagree more.

Removing a sign mourning or calling attention to a missing person?

Reprehensible.

If any of my employees did that, I'd fire them immediately.

And it doesn't matter which "side" they're on, I'd do exactly the same if someone removed a poster remembering Wadea Al-Fayoume.
