Censoring pro-palestine speech

In the weeks after 9/11, Bill Maher was fired for saying far less.

Was it right? Maybe not. But it happened.

Some activists and commentators need to learn that it’s not enough to “be right” when trying to persuade people to your point of view. “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.”

I don’t think I’ve seen one celebrity stand up to critize Israel’s killing of 2000 kids in Gaza since the awful Hammas attach. Maybe someone with an Arab background but that’s about it. If they did stand up to critize, they would probably lose contracts, jobs, etc. a la the Canary Mission.

Everyone has rightly called for the hostages to come home but calling for a ceasefire in holllywood hasn’t really happened from what I’ve see . It’s like those civilians don’t matter or people are too afraid of being cancelled.

It should be okay to say that I support the people of Israel after the horrific acts of terrorism but I do not support the corrupt ultra-right government of Israel. I detest Hamas but support the civilians of Palestine particularly all the innocent children trapped there. This past week a group of parents at my friends objected to the annual trick or treat for UNICEF because some of the proceeds would be used to help children in Palestine. This seems insane to me, it seems like any expression of support for Palestine is now considered unacceptable in the workplace, on social media, or at school. I find this completely out of line as a proponent of free speech. It seems like a dangerous slope that we are treading down.

It’s too funny how the left is finally paying attention to speech issues now that impacts them personally.

To quote a leftist talking point: freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from consequences. No parent is forced to support Palestinian causes and it is their right to abstain from the trick or treat.

I personally agree with you that this cancel culture is ridiculous. I just find the hypocrisy on the left too much to take. How would you feel about a trick or treat that supports Israeli causes? Would you really be posting this if that parents were boycotting that instead? I doubt it.

As usual, someone from the right comparing apples to oranges attempting to get a zinger in there.

There has been a group of celebrities that wrote a letter to Biden asking for a ceasefire-it was signed by Susan Sarandon, Mark Ruffalo, Hasan Minaj, and bunch of others but those are the most popular names. I saw it on Hasan Minajs Instagram. Instagram has been censoring a lot of pro Palestine content and took down eye.on.Palestine just the other day.

When calling for killing to stop (ie a ceasefire) is labelled antisemitism, it makes me think those people have no perspective.

When noting that Pro - Palestinians protests are calling for annihilation of Israel (as a PP above did) without noting that the land Israel sits on was once homes of Palestinians (Jews and Muslims and Christians), it makes me think those people are willfully blind to history.

When people discuss Jewish hate crimes without understanding that Palestinians and others from the Middle East are fearful for reporting anti Muslim hate crimes due to the way they were treated after 911, it makes me think they need to open their hearts to understanding.

This is a horrific situation for all.

I am with you OP. I am devastated by the terrorist actions of Hamas, but I am also disgusted that the Israeli government is going to use this to push its horrible treatment of the people of Gaza even further. But you can't say that. The entire situation is horrific.

Gigi or Bella Hadid did. Theyre currently facing death threats and the FBI had to step in .

She’s half Palestinian though

No, it’s the exact same thing. Would OP be posting this comment about “censorship” if the moms boycotted trick or treat because UNICEF gives money to Israeli kids?

NP. I cannot fathom what OP is talking about. The large pro-Palestinian protests where I live (deep blue urban) have had signs and chants calling for the destruction of all Jews. Like not lefty “no justice no peace” but full-on destroy the Jews type stuff.

Seriously I cannot imagine a world where the Palestinian cause has *more* lack of censorship. I’m completely puzzled as to what OP is talking about.

Boycotting UNICEF is not what the OP is calling censorship. You are too busy trying to one-up somebody you perceive to be "on the left" to think. The point is that innocents are being harmed on both sides and many of us are concerned about ALL of them, not just the ones from Israel (although we care about those innocent people, too). No one is penalizing anyone for saying they feel for or want to help innocent Israelis. But if you express and concern about Palestinians or make any reference to the Israeli governments treatment of them, you will get blasted right now.

There are many people protesting for Palestine who are not also calling for destruction of all Jews. Rational and decent people oppose the kind of blatant antisemitism perpetrated by those carrying those signs. But that is not everyone protesting in support of or voicing concern for Palestinian *civilians*.

Your post kind of makes the point right there with your suggestion that everyone at these protests supports that disgusting and radical way of thinking.

The point is that if people feel free to express those horrific sentiments, there isn’t a lot of censorship going on. Of course not everyone, not even the vast majority, supports that awful speech (and nothing in the post implies that). But if people feel free to have large protests where grotesque antisemitism is expressed, there just isn’t a lot of censorship.

By not silencing their fellow protestors they are condoning the messages of destruction and hate. They should be deplatformed, and yet we keep hearing the chants and calls. Clearly, the Pro Palestinian protesters don't care enough to stop it.

Israel is spending a lot of time and effort to try and win the information war and the hearts and minds of the West. Europe's largest news aggregator ordered editors to play down Palestinian deaths (check out the Intercept for the article). I know Israel is also spending a lot of money on youtube ads talking about those kidnapped.

They have the money and time to do so unlike the Palestinian reporters on the ground in Gaza that are being bombed (or their families - like the Al-Jazeera bureau chief).

It is never going to work.
