Censoring pro-palestine speech

Seriously I cannot imagine a world where the Palestinian cause has *more* lack of censorship. I’m completely puzzled as to what OP is talking about.

My Israeli friends are afraid of flying the flag of Israel. I have not seen any Israeli flags in our progressive neighborhood. None.
Israel went through a major tragedy, it was attacked with unimaginable cruelty, and instead of showing support, the public is victim blaming and supporting the country where terrorists came from.

And my Muslim friends (including ones who are not Palestinian) are afraid of talking over the phone about how the conflict is impacting them and their families because they are afraid law enforcement are monitoring their conversations. They think that just expressing sadness for the Palestinians killed in this conflict might be enough for the FBI to come knocking on their doors. They are truly afraid.

In our progressive town there are lawn signs in support of Israel. And “kidnapped” signs hung up in public spaces. Zero sign of Palestinian support (and Palestinian support does not equal support of the Hamas attacks)

This situation is sad for everyone. 5x the number of Israelis. Support for a ceasefire does NOT equal antisemitism.

Are you seriously saying you have a problem with the kidnapped signs?

A ceasefire is ultimately anti-Israel because this is what would happen:

Israel stops firing.

Hamas exploits the situation and ramps up attacks.

It should be okay to say that I support the people of Israel after the horrific acts of terrorism but I do not support the corrupt ultra-right government of Israel. I detest Hamas but support the civilians of Palestine particularly all the innocent children trapped there. This past week a group of parents at my friends objected to the annual trick or treat for UNICEF because some of the proceeds would be used to help children in Palestine. This seems insane to me, it seems like any expression of support for Palestine is now considered unacceptable in the workplace, on social media, or at school. I find this completely out of line as a proponent of free speech. It seems like a dangerous slope that we are treading down.

Because the internet is no place for nuance.

If you support that, you are supporting dismantling an entire state in favor of a Palestinian one. That is very different than advocating for a rational two state solution. If you are advocating for the former, it is a detestable position (worse than Israeli settlers in the West Bank, for example). It’s not censored and there are too many anti semitic people and moronic progressives who angrily advocate for this.

This is a lie that is continued by the pro-Israel community to demonize those who believe in human rights and liberation of Palestine. "From the river to the sea" refers to the freedom of the Palestinian people in the entire region and not the annihilation of Israel. It is a call for all Palestinians to live freely, unoppressed, demilitarized and with equal rights.

It is precisely this type of speech by PP that enables the censorship of any call for a free Palestine. How can calling for freedom of Palestinians and acknowledgment of their suffering be condemned? That is only permitted if you are successfully able to dehumanize them, as PP has done here.

I support equal human rights for Palestinians throughout the entire land. I think it is madness that pro-apartheid folks are able to twist that into victimization of Israel particularly when it was Israel who displaced millions and murdered an entire population to usurp the land. Are we not to recognize that? The revisionist history in real time is wild.

It’s too funny how the left is finally paying attention to speech issues now that impacts them personally.

To quote a leftist talking point: freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from consequences. No parent is forced to support Palestinian causes and it is their right to abstain from the trick or treat.

I personally agree with you that this cancel culture is ridiculous. I just find the hypocrisy on the left too much to take. How would you feel about a trick or treat that supports Israeli causes? Would you really be posting this if that parents were boycotting that instead? I doubt it.

OP here, actually I think censoring of any speech is dangerous regardless of political ideology. When there was massive controversy about rejecting ultra conservative speakers on college campuses, I also supported the right for them to be there. As for UNICEF, of course any parent has a right to not participate. What bothers me is the a small group of parents has now decided that the school should not participate at all because they are not happy with money going to Palestinian children.

Blind support of isreal will cost Biden the election. An election loss will set back civil rights and womens rights decades.

The intent of many of the signs is to stir anti-Arab and anti-Muslim hate by pro-apartheid groups. For example, many of the signs in NYC are positioned outside Palestinian restaurants, Arab centers, or similar and nowhere else in the neighborhood. This way, if someone takes them down, you can be charged with anti-semitism when really the locations were primed specifically to blame the local Arab communities.

Plus, what are the signs going to do? Is someone going to recognize a face and call Hamas? The intent is to create hatred for a certain group. But that is acceptable because as long as you hate Muslims and Arabs, there are no repercussions. No laws against that.

A ceasefire means both sides stop bombing/rockets.

I see the intent of the signs is to bring awareness of the act of violence. The next day after the terroristic act, anti-Israeli protestors were showing swasticas to the Israeli protestors on the Times square. Maybe seeing the kidnapped signs would help those siding with Hamas to see who are the real victims of the attack.

there you go. It's all in your language. You keep doing it: equating all Arabs and people who believe in the dignity and human rights of Palestinians as terrorists. It is precisely this dehumanization that has been on a slow rage under the surface. You cannot put Palestinians - and by extension all Muslims and Arabs - in this state of othering and less than (and for those in Palestine actual apartheid and extinction) without expecting complete and utter sadness, rage and frustration. It's unbelievable to me that you don't understand that

And to the signs, the placement is quite noticeable once you see videos of where they were placed. EG, Zaytoon in NYC is a well-known Palestinian restaurant. It's just a restaurant. There are 20+ signs right outside its front door and general vicinity - but no signs on any neighboring blocks or streets. Coincidence? Of course not. It's meant to demonize them for simple existing. Sound familiar?

It is insane that Israel can dominate how the US thinks and speaks with that.

Jewish Voice for Peace isn't actually Jewish. Please do your research before complaining that others are misinformed.

I believe his approval rating now is at 37%. He's a war mongering, genocidal, racist. I hate this man. I cannot bring myself to vote for him. It really is a decision of two evils. At this point, I may be stuck voting for Marianne Williamson. That's really all we've got.

No. This is so offensive.

The point of the signs is to MOURN KIDNAPPED PEOPLE.

I initially thought that very thing until I saw that they had been posted en masse outside of Arab institutions. I then realized that it was to disseminate hate.
