Maybe we could find a white cyclist from Tenleytown who was a victim of a violent crime? Then people would care?

I’m not sure why you presume that you are the only one who does care? Would you prefer that Ward 3 had elected the guy deploying the dog whistle over the voucher recipients? Would that convince you that they care more? And what the hell does this have to do with cycling?

Crime is bad. I get it. Other people here get it to. But our rate of violent crime is better than those other cities. It's like people in Ward 3 flipping out over a single digit increase in a type of crime, when from a level perspective they are way, way, way below the rest of the city.

We have more murders than Baltimore. And murders are way down in almost every other big city except DC where they’re up almost 40 percent.

Parts of DC have an absurdly high rate of murder. But other parts are just well below the national norms. Ward 3 residents complaining about car thefts (which are up freaking everywhere and tons of them are because Kia and Hyundai took serious short cuts) is uncool. Ward 7 and 8 can and should be in an uproar and that should also be where the city resources are pouring into. Parts of Ward 5 as well. Wards 4, 3, 2, 1 and 6 are all basically flat YoYoY for the last decade...



Above doesn't have 2023 in it, but if we look at that.. what do we see? Wards 7 & 8 are much worse than they were before, 6 and 1 are up slightly, 2 and 4 are down slightly, and ward 3 has had none this year (although normally doesn't have many).

I don't get this? Are we just supposed to further have a city of haves and have nots? Not caring about what's happening in other parts of the city, the country, the world just because where YOU live doesn't have problems...that just seems icky

Huh? The point is that people here and articles like the one at the start of this thread keep making it seem like this is a citywide problem. It's not. The focus of the government apparatuses (MPD should just be one of them) shouldn't be solving the limited problems in Ward 3. It should be focused on Wards 7 and 8 where the issues are leaps and bounds worse.

There was a giant pow-wow a week or so back by a CM and senior MDP officials because there was a rare shooting in Ward 3. There are freaking shootings every day (or more) in other Wards.

Ignore them, it's a game they play. When there hasn't been a high profile shooting in upper Northwest in a while, they say "why are you talking about this, it doesn't affect where you live." When there is a shooting in upper Northwest, they say "Oh, so you ignored it when it was happening in other parts of the city, but you want people to care now that it's happening to you?" (see the posts about the shooting on Connecticut Avenue where people are saying this).

There's no consistency, because they don't actually believe any of this. It's just whatever rhetoric they can grasp to try to shutdown any discussion about crime, even if they say the very opposite thing the next day.

Inflation *was* a problem for a small amount of time. It no longer is a huge problem.

The fed has already taken action to curb inflation. That's already had an effect. They are leaving those actions in place and benchmark interest rates are still elevated. But they did it in a cautious way so as not to run too hard into stagflation. It's called a soft landing, and by all accounts, its working as intended. If you're pissed off because the place you work for isn't giving you a raise, then take it up with your boss, who probably took out a PPP loan and bought a boat or some shit which was partly what drove a ton of this in the first place, or get a new job - because unemployment is near all time lows.

Just like the FRB missed the quick inflationary spike, they are about to miss the quick, ugly downturn. Your faith is misplaced.

The emphasis of the coverage is the issue. No one said these aren’t important issues, they’re just really not the most urgent ones. So the wall-to-wall coverage like they’re crises or something is what’s objectionable.

You are right, DEI funding and programs are more urgent. As is the funding and building of bike lanes - urgent!!! Crime - meh. It’s okay kids are having their shoes stolen in a public library. Not urgent!

Oh yeah if one ward 3 white dude on a bike gets hit on Connecticut avenue we have to spend billions of dollars completely reworking our transportation system and talk about it endlessly.

But if murders are up 40 percent, robberies are up 70 percent, car thefts have more than doubled, teenagers are looting drug stores — it’s oh crime is not that big of deal, why are you obsessed?

Maybe we could find a white cyclist from Tenleytown who was a victim of a violent crime? Then people would care?

I’m not sure why you presume that you are the only one who does care? Would you prefer that Ward 3 had elected the guy deploying the dog whistle over the voucher recipients? Would that convince you that they care more? And what the hell does this have to do with cycling?

Our government doesn’t give a shit about crime (it would be sad if they were actually trying to reduce crime and these were the results). But bike lanes? They are happy to talk about that all day long. You know there was a cyclist killed several years ago, right?

There was a cyclist (and father, and partner) who was murdered in Takoma this summer with a gun - because there is a huge upsurge in crime in Takoma. But we are not supposed to talk about crime.
