Police departments would do themselves a favor by having a faster process for reviewing and releasing body cam video. Too often the exonerating body cam video takes weeks to come out and by then people have already made up their minds. Whereas, if there's a video showing a police abuse taken by a bystander, that will get posted within hours. Police should do the same in the information war. The truth is what sets us free.

Another thing police departments should probably do is take 15 minutes each week to watch and talk about the latest video to go viral of some over-the-top cop losing control and behaving unprofessionally, doing an unnecessary chokehold, or bodyslamming someone who is being non-violent.

A regular, recurring "what not to do if you don't want to become vilified in internet infamy" session.

Police departments should also start spending more time out in the community getting to know people rather than sitting in cruisers.

Police need to restore trust.

Has MPD lost trust? MPD is not known for being abusive or for unauthorized use of force - the main complaint about MPD is lack of enforcement, lack of arrests, and subsequent-to-MPD lack of prosecution.

Speaking of loss of trust generally isn't helpful when we're talking of specific police departments.

It's so odd to me when people harp on the defund the police initiative -- when DC police budget hasn't been defunded. So defunding isn't the reason our crime is terrible.

At least people have moved on from the “it isn’t happening” response to skyrocketing crime. With an average of 4 carjackings a day, it’s fairly likely that someone who held that opinion had a gun in their face as they handed over their keys.
