r/washingtondc on Reddit has banned crime discussion

Funnily enough, it’s just now been resurrected. Have a look and you’ll see a post welcoming everyone back.

What I understood is that the lack of moderation combined with the current political climate in DC attracted the interest of the Reddit overlords and that the sub was shut down as a result.

That it’s now been allowed to resume business suggests that some form of moderation will now be taking place.

Pictures of the protests were apparently also deleted from some of the Virginia subreddits. Virginia and possibly Charlottesville … Reddit admins (the actual paid staff of Reddit, not the unpaid mods) have a lot of say in this. They don’t like the Luigi posts either.

That subreddit is now officially just as bad as the Popville comment section, full of mediocre white people who have lived here for two years but think they're DC experts. They're the kind of cretins who insist that Georgetown doesn't have a Metro system because the neighbors protested.

Crime posts? Banned, unless the victim is a white cyclist. Those posts are allowed.

Protest posts? Apparently banned.

36 repetitive posts about where to find the best burger/bbq/wings/breakfast in DC? Sure, the more the merrier.

Some redditor's crappy photo of a cherry tree? Yes, please.

This is 100% accurate. I'm a 52 yo DC native (born at Georgetown), raised in the Palisades, but settled in Old Town after college and grad school out west. I was banned after getting into it with one of the mods (who was from f++king Ohio) about how he was more DC than I was because he lived in Navy Yard. I'm half embarrassed I even engaged with the moron, but that is who they are.

I was threatened with a ban for reporting certain posters who were being abusive to others (a clear violation of the sub's "keep it civil" rule). The mod explained that because the posters I was reporting were being abusive to people who didn't toe the subreddit's preferred politics -- i.e., they didn't slobber GGWash; they pointed out that, yes, sometimes cyclists can be jerks; they dared point out that crime exists in DC -- those posters would not face any punishment. Fortunately, Reddit admins disagreed and at least two of the posters were banned, and the mods were reprimanded for not following their own rules.

A sub that covers up sexual assault and rape to worry about bike lanes. All you need to know.

It's called free speech.

Are you talking about how the government is reading it and punishing people for what they are writing? I’ve certainly heard of it happening recently but not on these subjects

There was a guy there who worked at the LOC who was completely batshit crazy and would post literally 250 times a day. I often wondered about letting the LOC know what he was doing during the workday.

No stop with the propaganda

That guy, jfc. He would brag about how little work he was doing on the taxpayers' dime, while also trying to portray himself as Mr. Hardcore DC (he was a privileged white mediocrity who grew up in AU Park). Looks as if he nuked his account a few years ago. Going to guess someone ratted him out to his bosses.

Anonymous wrote:Not surprising. Reddit was interesting some years ago. It's pretty hopeless these days. Twitter too.

The internet was a better place a decade or two ago.

Now excuse me while I tell some kids to get off my lawn
reddit has ccp ties no? And we know who is now in charge of x

Gonna need a new free speech platform in the near dystopian future. Thats assuming isps aren’t tagged to police

Your tendency to weave bike lanes into almost any discussion - no matter how little it has to do with bike lanes - is a true joy to behold.

Not as joyful as watching you try to minimize sexual assault for the gain of bicyclists.

Grasping at very thin straws is apparently a full-time occupation for you. But I'll bite: what in the world are you talking about?
