Have you ever had HPV that you know of?

Of course! How is this a question?

Because the guidance isn’t very clear.

The guidance is very clear. What on earth are you confused about?

Stop being mean. I got vaxxed at age 45 a year ago, but doctors are often not that clear about it. When I asked five years ago, my gyn didn't recommend it. Now she does, probably because it is officially approved for older women now.

I think one issue is that some doctors assume women over forty are not getting exposed to as much std wise. I feel this is SO not true for women who are dating. Online dating makes it very easy for men to sleep around a lot. Even if you are not sleeping around, even if you are not doing online dating, the guy you are may be.

I would go ahead and get vaxxed.

I think men in our age group should be getting vaxxed too. It annoys me they are not. I think it's sexist - like oh it's not a big deal to treat so who cares. To me it DOES sound like a big deal to treat so why aren't we vaccinating everyone? Because HPV doesn't have many repercussions for most men. Though I would still get vaccinated if I was a guy because of throat cancer, penile cancer, and not wanting to be the jerk who gives someone else cancer or warts.

I wasn’t mean at all. If you are dating, you should be vaccinated. No OB/GYN has disputed this even in my 40s.

But men can indeed be swabbed to test for HPV and there is also a way to test for HPV via a urine sample. I remember reading about a clinic in California that did offer swab tests for men and I once found a mail order urine HPV test for men. It may be that they are not as accurate, but it would be better than nothing. I absolutely hate that men are the main vectors for HPV and the medical establishment lets the weight of disease and testing fall on women. Maybe if the rates of oral/throat cancer keep increasing in men medicine will eventually stop seeing HPV as a "women's problem."

I know for a fact it exists. In dmv area. My ex boyfriend’s sister got him tested somehow she was a doctor. I recall it was urine culture . It can be PCR from swan or urine

You are wrong. There is no HPV test for men. A urine culture contest for other things other STI’s but not HPV.

CDC evidence:

No, there is currently no approved test for HPV in men. CDC does not recommend routine testing (also called 'screening') for HPV in men

Not necessarily.

Most people who get HPV will never ever know. It is astonishing a little people know on this site about the most common STI that exists in the United States.

I guess I was asking the opposite- if a male has warts is that HPV always?

General warts are caused by one of hundreds HPV strains. Gender is irrelevant.

That’s YOUR experience. I had my gyn discourage it in 2018 and encourage it in 2023. My pcp discouraged me from getting it in 2021. I absolutely think women should get the hpv vaccine but guidance is not always clear.

Guys there ARE hpv tests for men. They are used in studies about hpv. The problem is they aren’t commercially available.

HPV testing isn't standard for well woman visits. Pap smears only detect cervical changes, which are often due to HPV. But you could have very, very new case of HPV that hasn't led to cervical changes yet so it wouldn't register on the pap.

I think Pap smears now do reflexive HPV testing

No. They are separate tests. You can do one or the other or both but it’s two tests.

I had it in my mid 20s. I had a biopsy to remove it and have had regular paps ever since. My daughters are getting the vax. One has already had the shot.

I am a GenXer who was married for years, which means: the vaccine was not available to us growing up; and I believed my husband was my only partner and vice versa. Wrong. I did get it, and had it removed in my throat. I am now 50, and I started the vaccination process a couple of years ago now that I am single. My doctor suggested it.

Gay or straight? Immune suppressed or not? Smokers/drinkers? These things matter.

NP. 40 y.o. Straight male non-smoking, non-drinking friend got throat cancer from HPV. He didn’t die but he did have to get cancer treatment - radiation, chemo, etc.

He is Gen X, like me. We did not have access to HPV vaccine and even in monogamous straight relationships were exposed to HPV for long periods, which in men who perform oral sex without protection (dental dams and safe oral sex were also not so common in Gen X), can lead to cancer.

When I was in college my boyfriend (exclusive) gave me HPV. It showed up as warts. He had contracted it from his previous relationship, got it treated, but had come back without him being aware.

I was quite horrified but got treatment for the warts. I had a few irregular paps. After that it never came back and I never had symptoms or an irregular pap again. This was 20 years ago.

From what I understand the vaccine protects against certain cancer-causing strains of HPV, the ones that do not cause genital warts.

Never had it and I consider myself extremely lucky. I was stupid in my early 20s and slept with a couple of random guys while I was unvaccinated. Now I’m married and have never had an abnormal Pap.
