Wake has excellent D1 teams like Michigan? The only thing they have in common historically athletically is that they’re both D1 division schools. |
Do you not follow college sports? Both are in Power 5 conferences. Wake’s football team has been ranked in the T20 each of the past two years. The baseball and men’s soccer teams were ranked #1 this past year. Basketball has historically been strong at Wake with Tim Duncan probably their most famous alum (although Mugsy Bogues a sentimental favorite of mine given his local ties) and Chris Paul the more recent, although in recent years, more middle of the pack ACC, although respectable. Wake has made the Sweet 16 nine times and the NCAA tournament 23 times. Although not a big spectator sport, golf is always strong, going back to Arnold Palmer’s days at Wake. Women’s tennis, field hockey and golf also very strong. All this with a student population less than a quarter of Michigan’s. |
No, they just thought Politics was more accurate than “Political Science” That is why I always say my degrees are in Politics and Policy (my masters is in public policy) |
Mugsy graduated with me in 98 - he didn’t finish his degree until later I am not sure Chris Paul finished his degree there - he left for the NBA early and I think finally earned his degree very recently at NC A&T (?, don’t quote me, but it was an HBAC) Timmy was a rare one that stayed his full 4 years and graduated on time. It was an amazing time to be a student there. |
| Shoot, HBCU - sorry, I’ve had acronyms thrown at me all day at a conference! |

Current parent of WFU student here. Our student likes his time there so far. A couple comments:
It is a beautiful suburban campus not rural. Winston is kind of funky with dive bars next to a sushi place next to a gastropub. The only issue is that there is not a lot to walk to from campus, need a quick Uber or access to a car. Sports facilities are on campus such as gym, sports fields, etc. Only football stadium and basketball arena are off campus. Not uncommon when you consider schools like Michigan have their stadium off campus too. But both big arena/stadium are walkable or three minute Uber. Students are nice but motivated as my student puts it. When you consider that a large % major in accounting, business management, pre-med type tracks like biology, yes there is a pre-professional vibe that may not be for your student. Because there is not a big bar scene near campus the Greek scene is bigger than at some other campuses. Tough to fix when you are not UNC with Franklin street right there as an example. Wake accepts 20%, 3600 of 18,000 past cycle. Yield is almost 40% which is impressive. People want to go there. I would say this to close. Wake is in a small group of schools outside ivies and Duke for example, that offers a nice size at 5500 students, D1 sports in the ACC, small classes, and a nice climate. It checks a lot of boxes and I would say punches high for its size. |
| Not Stuart. |
This is really helpful, thank you. It’s on my son’s list for these reasons- climate, size, seems friendly, smart kids. |
No not preppy Southern anymore, lots of kids from NY, DC and California. But super wealthy. Movie star kids, Investment banking CEO’s kids, professional coaches kids. Very wealthy… |
Not. Mugsy was not 98. He was 88. With me. Google it. |
Again, this is every T50 private school. |

It's my son's first choice. He's preppy, sporty, mainstream, guy's guy. popular crowd-goes to all the parties. Smart with top grades and scores but not an academic--does what is required and nothing more. He's very much the Pre-professional type.
He has a twin sister who is nothing like this and has no interest in Wake. |
this is a troll. |
This description could be Wake, UMiami, Tulane, Vanderbilt. It attracts the same kids. |
