I am taking the private school magnet decal off my suv because…

Look, there is only one reason why private school parents put the decal on their cars: pride. And you need to be more humble than that.

What about all the bumper stickers I see on cars that say "my kid is an honor role student at (name the public school}? Are these people tacky?

Yes, of course, just as the attention-seeking private school stickers are tacky.

Isn't it apparent that if you prioritize private education you may not have money left to go on expensive trips? This was certainly true for my family growing up. Middle class child of immigrants who went to a NE boarding school. My own two kids are going through publics all the way simply because we could not make the same sacrifice my parents made for me.

You should be ashamed of yourself.

Because they won’t tank the family finances for private school? Get over yourself.

Your reading comprehension is abysmal.

Ugh, so rude. Good for you for working hard and sending your kids to the school you feel is best (on your own, nonetheless!). We send our boys to private and take very modest vacations. We all make our choices!

Your coworker is rude and envious. Now you know who she is.
I wouldn't remove my decal.

But your coworker was rude, regardless.

Such poor and tacky behavior by your coworker!

Your coworker clearly hit a nerve. Because of private school, your family is paying an opportunity cost, no travel. It sucks, but you prioritize education and that's awesome. Have your kids whined that they never get to go anywhere fun like so and so and you felt like crap? That happens to everyone in some way. But if possible, could you make a promise to yourself to put away 20-50 dollars a paycheck to save up for gas and 1-2 nights at a hotel going somewhere to something...doesn't have to be grand...just a change of scenery.

Well, if that’s true, then your kid is a total loser

We used to have an old car that was great for gloating with magnets from our Big 3 school.

Then we bought a brand new Tesla, and to our horror the magnets wouldn't stick to the aluminum exterior.

We cried ourselves to sleep that night.

You have plenty of money and being a single parent means nothing as Dad could be heavily involved, paying for the private school, child support and more.

Your child probably earned that spot.
You have made sacrifices to send them there.

Wear the hoodie. Drive the car. Be a part of the community.

That person is a jerk. Don't bend to match their vibe.

Nothing that happened is OP's fault. My DC worked hard to get into their school and I'm proud. I've also had people comment to me in parking lots (prospective parents) who were excited to talk to a parent of the school. I find it builds community.

Yea, I get it. My daughter is very successful, works hard, and makes a lot of money. So I have a bumper sticker on my car that announces her income so the whole world knows it. I’m really proud of her.

See how that works?

(I am a single parent which may or may not mean anything). She had the nerve to say “if i could afford to send my child to a $40k school i would go on more expensive trips”. I told her let me get back to my office and walked away. I never told this coworker or anyone at work that my child goes to private. The only way she would know is from my vehicle. Just venting. She caught me off guard.

Don’t let her control your actions. Just blow that b off.

“Well, Susan, we all choose different things sometimes, don’t we?” Turn and walk away.

People assume my family is wealthy due to schools. We are so far from that and get aid. I often don’t respond to stupid comments. I just shrug. Or say something benign like the above. Not worth my time or energy.

I get it......the make of her car and her designer handbag should be enough. No magnet needed.

I took ours off a few years ago. I think it’s a combo of wanting privacy and the realization that the place isn’t all that great. And, when I see many the people with the cars that do carry the sticker, I reaffirm my decision. My kids wear school tshirts all of the time which is fine by me… we certainly have paid for them but that’s where the free advertising stops for us.
