America is far from free. Why do we accept living under perpetual fear of endless gun violence?

No one is attempting to pass gun control legislation at the federal level. Not the GOP, and not the Democrats. This is just an issue that people talk about, not one that they put any actual work or effort into.

2022: The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act breaks a nearly 30-year stalemate on Capitol Hill over federal gun laws when it is signed into law in June 2022. "At a time when it seems impossible to get anything done in Washington, we are doing something consequential," Biden says then. The law includes $750 million to help states implement so-called "red flag" laws to remove firearms from people deemed to be a danger to themselves or others as well as other violence prevention programs. It also provides funding for a variety of programs aimed at shoring up the nation's mental health apparatus and securing schools. It enhances background checks for gun buyers under the age of 21 and closes what is known as the "boyfriend loophole" so individuals in "serious" "dating relationships" who are convicted of domestic abuse will be prevented from purchasing a gun. But other, tougher restrictions are taken off the table as part of negotiations with conservatives, including raising the minimum age to buy assault-type weapons, mandatory waiting periods for all gun sales and universal background checks.

I don't live in an area with gang violence. In fact, I live in the suburbs of a larger metro area. My family has been one degree of separation from gun violence three times in the last nine years. My son was scheduled to be at a community center an hour after a boy and his grandfather were shot and killed; my son got a frantic text telling him not to come. My daughter's sorority sister was shot and killed by a stray bullet at a popular community event. And my friend's daughter was on lockdown in her suburban high school after a kid brought a gun to school and an administrator and security guard were shot. If you live in this country and aren't afraid of shootings you're not paying attention.

+100

It’s so frustrating to hear people say well if you live in an upper class suburb you will never get affected. These are not gang related shootings being carried out in Harlem. These are random shootings where one crazy person has access to an AR -15 and starts shooting randomly. None of us are safe. Tyson’s corner itself has been under heavy security because of the recent escalation in threats there.

Let’s address this. What changed in Tysons Corner?

Why isn't it moving or being talked about? It's been sitting since January.

This was a minor effort but it did have bipartisan support, and I would expect them to be building on this. They aren't.

Pathetic. They passed a bill to hire 87k more IRS agents and this is to hire 200 more ATF agents? It would be laughable if it were so shockingly inadequate to address our unsafe communities.

Yes they've moved, because our communities have gotten less safe. It's not crazy to look at what politicians are actually doing vs what they say they will do. What, are we supposed to just be happy that they make promises to us at all? Regardless of whether they keep them?

Violence is spiraling out of control. They should be passing gun control or at a minimum, enforcing the laws already on the books. They are doing neither. I don't need politicians to be an influencer class that just tells me gun control is good. They need to actually do their jobs and pass the laws, oversee the enforcement, appropriate funding, etc.

The goal posts have moved since a couple of hours ago when a PP said, "No one is attempting to pass gun control legislation at the federal level. Not the GOP, and not the Democrats." This is just false. If a person doesn't think the proposals are going far enough or that lawmakers are doing enough to try to get the measures passed? Fine. Say that.

None of this matters. And you are focusing on the wrong thing. And it's despicable.
