Dave Chapelle's latest stand-up special is about this. The one with all the controversy on NetFlix. Be sure to watch the bit on "The Baby" - a rapper who shot and killed someone and went on with his career, but then made some homophobic statements and was canceled. Not saying we can tolerate homophobic statements, but it really does point out the disproportionate response that can be generated when something becomes so politicized.

I'll have to watch that. It does seem like a disproportionate response.

Imagine if it was the “He-Man Woman-Haters club”. Does anyone think they’d have called the police for that? Or how about the “Down With Cis-People” club? Would that have gotten a police response?

Those groups are not frequent targets of hate crimes!!

Having said that, there is still a lot of work to do at Wood on bullying issues, many of them racial in nature. I hope she comes down on those issues the way she has on this one. I think this incidence has shed a lot of light on many issues that entire community needs to openly address and I hope she is the one starting the conversation.

Problem here is the principal is sending the message that the actual crimes like fighting and underage smoking/vaping won’t be dealt with and kids know it, but thought crimes- oh dear no you can’t do that- send in the COPS NOW! Unleash the dogs. Teach those kids they can’t write a word and delete it without police involvement, but they can beat the crap out of each other on a regular basis or smoke daily in the bathroom but that’s ok.

Do you really not see that as a problem?

Suspension? MCPS doesn't do that. Shouldn't he get Restorative Justice counseling like the kids who do drugs and fight in school?

+1. There is no way these kids are getting a suspension. All the pearl clutchers on DCUM don't even seem to realize that MOST of the immigrant groups in MCPS are deeply conservative on issues like this.

Stop rationalizing hate. MCPS has had protection for anti-hate since 2005. If you want a school with your religious beliefs, move back home or go to a religious school.

You can also move to a country without a Constitution that provides First Amendment rights.

First amendment rights does not include harassment, hate and exclusion in public schools moron.

So many turn a blind eye to fights, vaping, bigotry, etc… Involve the police and let them decide. It shouldn’t be up to the school

Are the fights reported to the police? Genuinely curious.

And creating a club for homophobic students on a school Chromebook goes beyond ignoring someone. I mean how stupid are you? Are you the mom of this boy

Let me get the story straight...... Some teacher was scrounging through the recycle bin on on student's chromebook and found a google form that was created and deleted 2-4 months ago after (worst case scenario) a kid created the form and then realized what they did was wrong and deleted it. Principle Heidi decided that this was a crime that needed police involvement AND that this incident was of such high magnitude that she needed to send a letter out to all parents.

Who is the real problem.....?

+1

Principle Heidi should be fired.

Ignore fights, drugs but call cops for something like this.

LGBT community has done numbers on MCPS. First trying to push their views via mandatory reading and now this. No one else matters in MCPS. It's all LGBT. A tiny population, but very influential due to being noise makers.

Ok homophobic Mommy. You came in loud and clear.

Newsflash the school is not required to call the police for fights on minors unless it leads to a full assault. Administration has told all school and faculty that any hate based speech, actions, or drawings must be reported. That has been plenty apparent. They called the police when they found a swastika on a desk at Tilden.

Who said they are beating the crap out of each other and smoking in the bathrooms? I said there was some bullying issues but it’s not like kids are getting into fistfights daily.

Yes, as long as the beatings aren’t happening every single day, they should just carry on then.

Yes, I am a Wood parent and I definitely see this as a problem. I do normally like the Principal, but this situation was handled incredibly poorly. I don’t blame her though because I think this is what MCPS wants principals to do.

At Wood? Yes, there are a good number of fights.

What middle school do your kids attend?

Wood as well. My child has not talked about excessive fighting happening. I’m not saying that it’s not happening, just that he has never mentioned it. Verbal bullying yes but not physical.

There are fights at every school and knowing the MC police, they are not required to be called. It is for the school to decide. If you want the police notified for all fights, they would be at every middle school at least 2-3x a week. That is why they need an SRO at every middle school. But that isn't going to happen.

Memo down from administration is to call police on all hate crimes. Let the police decide. Otherwise principals sweep everything under the rug. She did her job and now the police will do theirs.

Do you even know what a “hate crime” is? It’s not hateful speech. It has to be an actual crime *motivated* by bias. There might not even be any hateful words said (although you’d need evidence of the intent). If MCPS is telling principals to report offensive speech to the POLICE as a hate crime, that’s pretty disturbing. And almost certainly would (if fairly applied) result in many many POC getting reported to the police.

How about administration and police know more about what is going on, what they saw, and the 3 people involved than you do.

But keep putting your 2 cents in

If that’s your take you’ve missed the point entirely.

Try reading the message from the principal again. Focus on the part where there was no crime but there were cops involved.
