Earl B Middle school homophobic club?

Sounds like a typical middle schooler bad joke. I hope the kids understand they can't even joke about such things.

I doubt these were LatinX kids. Sounds more like kids who are themselves bullied.

"LatinX" is imperialistic and disrespectful to Hispanic/Latino/Latina people.

Please don't use that term.

It’s not a hate-bias incident.

Of course it is. Middle school kids know exactly what they are doing

It’s *obviously* not a crime. There is zero evidence of crime. You don’t report non-crimes to the police. False reports ARE crimes. This is a school discipline issue.

It doesn't have to be a crime. Read the linked document. It specifically says hate-bias incidents must be reported to the police. If you don't like that, feel free to submit testimony at the next BOE meeting.

Yeah I read that - that is why it’s so absurd. That was the whole point. And reporting a non-crime is not something I would do, principal or not. The other point is that the principal is certainly not reporting ALL “hate-bias” incidents. Just the ones by white kids.

Falsely reporting someone to the police - I hope these kids parents sue MCPS and the school.

Please, explain how it is justified to report non-crimes to the police, in your world view.

How about the Montgomery County Police Department's world view?

https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/pol/howdoI/report-a-hate-bias-incident.html

It says right there - there has to be an underlying crime. Words alone are not a crime even if “hateful.” Especially when they were never directed towards a protected class person. Come on people, this is basic stuff.

You didn't read very well:

"A bias-related incident may be motivated by the same reasons as a hate crime but is different because the initial action did not rise to the level of a criminal offense."

"The MCPD will document every allegation of a hate crime or bias incident and further investigate. The Community Engagement Division (CED) monitors and tracks all Hate-Bias events in Montgomery County."

That is the WHOLE POINT. MCPS should not have a policy of reporting non-crimes to the police. Not sure why this is hard to understand.

There was ONE study where 40% of people of Hispanic descent said it was disrespectful. Which means 60% did not think it was disrespectful. Meanwhile, there are people who find Hispanic imperialistic because they don’t have Spanish ancestry or the Spanish ancestry they have was from colonizers raping their African or Native female ancestors. Read a little about which activists have embraced the term before you speak for everyone.

It’s not the police department’s policy to requires schools report children for non-crimes using vague criteria that violate the 1st Amendment. And if it is, they are equally wrong.

I continue to be stunned that people who in other contexts call for no SROs/defund police think this is an acceptable policy.

Have you not read this thread? Most parents are rationalizing this behavior as just jokes or even better, saying their religion/cult doesn’t believe in it and do the kid shouldn’t be at fault. It’s scary

This +1 million and I have kids at Wood.

We have limited resources. I don’t want to see our school and county resources wasted on a non-issue. Use that to deal with actual issues.

No money is allocated to the police investigating. How uneducated are you?

The police work for free? Not quite. Calling the police over some kids acting stupid is a waste of resources. I don't blame the Principal, but I do blame the BOE/MCPS for this nonsense.

It doesn’t come out of the school budget.

That is not what anyone has said. What has been said is that reporting this to the police (while ignoring actual crimes like assaults) is a terrible approach. School discipline is likely appropriate.
