It’s not a hate-bias incident.

Of course it is. Middle school kids know exactly what they are doing

It’s *obviously* not a crime. There is zero evidence of crime. You don’t report non-crimes to the police. False reports ARE crimes. This is a school discipline issue.

It doesn't have to be a crime. Read the linked document. It specifically says hate-bias incidents must be reported to the police. If you don't like that, feel free to submit testimony at the next BOE meeting.

Exactly--seeing the variety of opinions here, some will see it as a reportable incident and some will not. But it's not solely up to the principal to make that call. So she brought in the police to give their input. And they found it was not worthy of pursuit. Fine, at least the principal is not the one responsible for making that decision, as she shouldn't be. If she had done nothing, I guarantee there would be another thread on that. It's not like these kids were arrested and thrown in prison. My kid attends the school and doesn't even know who it was.

But I do think that Wood could do a better job with other racially-charged incidences. I feel that those are often swept under the rug or ignored, especially those being perpetrated by POC.

Why do we have higher standards of behavior from ma boys than POTUS or politicians? This is a teaching moment. Let the kids go with a slap on the wrist.
I doubt these were LatinX kids. Sounds more like kids who are themselves bullied.

Yeah I read that - that is why it’s so absurd. That was the whole point. And reporting a non-crime is not something I would do, principal or not. The other point is that the principal is certainly not reporting ALL “hate-bias” incidents. Just the ones by white kids.

Falsely reporting someone to the police - I hope these kids parents sue MCPS and the school.

Please, explain how it is justified to report non-crimes to the police, in your world view.

How about the Montgomery County Police Department's world view?

https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/pol/howdoI/report-a-hate-bias-incident.html

It says right there - there has to be an underlying crime. Words alone are not a crime even if “hateful.” Especially when they were never directed towards a protected class person. Come on people, this is basic stuff.

b/c it gives administators and opportunity to grandstand about being anti-racist.

There is zero evidence the principal thought this was a crime. And zero rationale for why this “crime” as opposed to all the other actual crimes (assaults, drugs) would be reported to the police.

I do t care about a homophobic club that did not see the light of the day. If no action was taken by the club then it is thought policing.

I care about gun control, drug overdoses, pedophile staff. MCPS needs to fix that more.

This +1 million and I have kids at Wood.

We have limited resources. I don’t want to see our school and county resources wasted on a non-issue. Use that to deal with actual issues.

You didn't read very well:

"A bias-related incident may be motivated by the same reasons as a hate crime but is different because the initial action did not rise to the level of a criminal offense."

"The MCPD will document every allegation of a hate crime or bias incident and further investigate. The Community Engagement Division (CED) monitors and tracks all Hate-Bias events in Montgomery County."

How would they have known no action was taken unless they investigated?

In school, it is now hate incidents, not just crime. Why? Because it isn’t up to a principal to devise what is considered a crime/threat and what isn’t. Come on people. This is basic stuff.

No money is allocated to the police investigating. How uneducated are you?

I look forward to the regular phone calls for the kids who yell the N word and Fagg$t as they walk through the school hallways. Happens all the time and have never heard of the police being called. Each of those incidents should be considered hate ‘incidents’ and the police can investigate. It’s what MCPS wants.

The police work for free? Not quite. Calling the police over some kids acting stupid is a waste of resources. I don't blame the Principal, but I do blame the BOE/MCPS for this nonsense.

I don't disagree with you but it's a lot harder prove when those things happen vs. a slideshow on an MCPS computer.

Yes. This is the big difference. It's documented, connected to students' accounts, using MCPS equipment. It obviously rises to the level of a reportable incident.
