I have tons of friends in PA. Fetterman’s got this. Normal people see him as one of them. Every time Oz smirks at Fetterman’s impairments, he loses another vote.

After seeing all the posts about how awful and painful this supposedly was, it was ridiculous when I finally watched the actual debate and saw a guy with some word stumbles and that’s it. I was expecting someone who was barely sentient and less coherent than Trump, not obviously smart and far more coherent than Trump. I’m annoyed at all the drama.

Both are top issues. Do you believe abortion will be a top issue over the economy for the general voter population in states where it is still legal? Some of this will probably hinge on whether voters believe the economy is good or bad right now.

As far as who abortion IS a priority issue for, OVER the economy, it’s not even close. Literally everyone is affected by the economy. Abortion? Nope. Only half the population can even have one. Of that half, half are opposed to it. That leaves 25% of voters, at best. Except it’s not even a relevant issue for many of that 25%, either. Remove those women who live in states where it will always be legal. Remove those women who are too old to care because they won’t need an abortion. Remove those women with the financial means to travel to another state if they need an abortion. Whet percentage do you now have left who see abortion as the primary issue of the election? Single-digits percentage.

This election is not about abortion for anyone besides the most strident, dedicated leftists.

Everyone else just wants to know if they’ll have a job and be able to put gas in the car next year.

Conservatives are always so quick to minimize issues that matter to women. Abortion is really about autonomy and keeping the government out of medical decisions. If the government actually listened to the concerns of women, we would have better health and child care in this country. The child care system is completely FUBAR in this country. It’s expensive and hard to get. I’m rich and had to quit my job because I couldn’t get child care… and this was before the pandemic! All of this to say PP is absolutely correct. Abortion is economic. Conservatives care about economic but only for men, and specifically rich white men.

Nonetheless no I wouldn’t vote for him at this time. Having a stroke has physical and cognitive side effects. It is possible that with the passage of time both improve but it’s not a given. There is also quite a bit of follow up medical appts and monitoring. And once a person has a stroke they are far more likely to suffer another. He needs to put time and effort into healing and that is where his energy will eventually be needed. He can continue to push himself but he will likely burn out it worse suffer another stroke. I know someone who struggled with aphasia after a stroke. It took a few months to get back to a level where he didn’t have to struggle for the most common words and about a year out, he only struggled if he became very tired. It didn’t go away completely it just improved.

Members of Congress get cancer and go out for months for treatment & recovery….including multiple bouts of cancer. Steve Scalise was shot and out of commission for months. Tons of members of congress have serious medical conditions that require ongoing care, including Senator McConnell.

Fetterman will be fine and improve with time. He will have doctors in both DC and PA helping with ongoing speech therapy.

This is truly a nothingburger. The guy isn’t a vegetable, he can think and write. Debate and speech is mostly dead in the Senate.

Why are you comparing cancer or physical disabilities to mental impairment? Of course we aren't going to kick someone out of the Senate for physical injuries or disabilities. The truth is nobody, except perhaps him, knows his full condition, and the extent of actual damage. He may recover further, or he many not.

Because people in this thread are saying he will miss work due to treatments. It's a shoddy argument.

We already know a significant portion of members of Congress have mental health issues and old age impairments. It's not clear to me why Fetterman is judged differently, especially because he's still fairly young and can make a full recovery.

We have NO IDEA how much he will improve. He could have reached that already. He won't release his medical records or his prognosis.

If that’s what you think of when you consider somebody a highly qualified candidate for the US Senate then your standards and expectations are absurdly low. What exactly has Fetterman achieved in his career to deserve this nomination? You may agree with his policies and you may dislike Oz but nobody objectively can say Fetterman is a person you’d want representing your interests in the Senate.

If he can press the button he's told to press, then he is qualified. Keeping a low profile and doing what he is told is an asset, not a disability.
