Why isn’t giorgia meloni being lauded as a #girlboss ?

Right wingers don't know how to govern and , there's a part of me that believes they know it. So, what do they do to mask their congenital imcompetence ? They resort to victimhood and bigotry which they know abounds in their society.

If past is prologue, this government won't last . Expect the usual from right wingers ( self dealing, corruption, rule breaking etc) . At this time next year, the Italian economy won't be noticeably better off. If anything, it could get quite worse. Tourism made up close to 11% of Italy's GDP pre-pandemic—a huge chunk of that tourism includes americans— who tend not to be the trump sticker, pick up truck driving kind . But rather the cosmopolitan, college educated, left leaning type. I'm not sure if 'we just elected a fascist' could pass as a successful tourism selling point .

Well said. Unlike other conservative right wing authoritarian states in Europe like Poland or Hungary, Italy actually offers (offered?) something of cultural value. As correct-thinking people decide to spend their money elsewhere, it is hoped Italians return to sanity. Hopefully a coalition of other governments join in and hasten this change.

What does that mean exactly?

It means that Italy offered a civilized haute couture while no one mentions culture when discussing Poland or Hungary. These countries are extreme right wing parodies. Indeed their main products tend to be truck drivers and other similar low skilled labor.

Why are you disrespecting peirogies!

The part where you know she’s full of sh#t? When she says she can’t be a “Christian mother”….in Italy. 😂

I mean, it’s just all so ridiculous. Just let people live their lives. The family is not “under attack.” Identity - gender or otherwise - is not “under attack.” At the heart of this thinking is “I’m a victim” status. I fear for anyone in Italy who is not part of her constituency of supporters.

Wow, a pretty impressive speech.

The best political speech I’ve seen in a long time.

Great in the sense that so many mindless rubes fall for the whole schtick. I never knew that Right wingers were anti capitalist!

Speech was more anti-globalist than anti-capitalist. The political defining line is globalist/nationalist for a lot of right wing populists and it resonates with people, clearly. It's as much about culture and identity, as it is about economic ordering of things.

Meloni is def not a capitalist but the bond market will handcuff her from doing truly dumb things.

That’s why the btp market is sanguine today whereas Liz truss is melting down gilts and the pound

Because she's a feckin Fascist. Like, openly Fascist. Jesus.

That’s for Italy to decide if they want to follow that path or not as long as votes aren’t tampered with during elections.

Is she running a sham election or taking over the country with an army?

I dont support her politics, but i also dont support not letting her air her views in public discourse

Except of course the original question wasn’t “do you think we should let fascists run for election, given that they don’t believe in following democratic norms” — which might be an interesting question— but “why aren’t people calling her role model for women” — which isn’t.

All women have to hold the same views?

Maybe she thinks her views are best for women?

LOL She's a fascist who doesn't think any other views should be allowed.

Given that the left calls anyone who doesn't agree with their progressive ideas "fascist," I am assuming she is conservative, moderate, probably reasonable and sensible.

+1. At this point when i see a beltway liberal call someone a “fascist”, I assume that they are a great person. This woman winning is another L for the liberal world order, which will come crashing down in due time.

I am not sure why it is so hard for you to understand. She is a post- fascist.
She comes out of the fold of the old Movimento Sociale, a far right political party created after WWII that was expressly and openly a post fascist party (reconstructing thr fascist party is a crime in Italy so nobody can create a party with that name. Movimento Sociale was not fascist in name but in substance, it’s members often used the fascist salute and so on). The symbol of Melonis party still has the design of the flame with the colors of the Italian flag, which was the symbol of Movimento Sociale and she has refused to remove it. The core base of her movement comes from the same tradition, officers have been filmed doing the fascist salute and so on. She has cleaned up her image but this si who she is. In her case, being called post fascist is not an insult, it’s just a description of which, until the recent clean up, she would be proud.

The sad part is that she may even be the least bad part of her coalition, salvini and berlusconi may be even worse (without being fascist). Italy has significant economic problems and some of the promises done by parties in her coalition (1000 euro pensions to all older women who never worked outside of the house snd never paid into the pension fund, salvini’s and berlusconi’s promise of a flat tax) would lead Italy to bankruptcy. Also Meloni has expressed support for Ukraine while salvini and berlusconi are clearly in Putin’s pocket)

Anyway, if you are happy that the liberal works order comes down and is replaced by Putin’s and China’s style of regimes, then I see why you are happy. But be careful for what you wish for, in Russia the elite is falling down windows at an alarming rate while peones are try to reach the closer border not to become cannon fodder……

It is not hard for the previous poster to understand. The PP welcomes this type of rhetoric and government in America.

To the Italian PP, thank you very much for your explanations of what's happening. It is very concise and a clear description.

In talking about her an Italian said that the only good thing about her is that she is an unknown entity and hasn't yet disappointed the Italians.
Migration is driving the right wing political agenda in Europe and will become even worse as climate migrants continue to push into European countries. The Italians fell for fascism before -- let them try again.

WTH is "climate migrants"? Most migrants are from sh**hole countries. They aren't falling apart because of climate In fact many of these countries have amazing climate where there is no harsh winter, extreme weather, and where everything grows. Some of these countries have great natural resources too. They don't have more extreme weather than FL or Southwest.

I don’t support meloni because her economics are terrible and will not put Italy on a sustainable footing.

She isn’t wrong on being mad about immigrants tho because unlike the us, they get really crappy quality immigrants.

For example, in the us, we get Asian immigrants, Nigerians, Latin americans that are pretty good immigrants for the most part. Either really educated or work their butts off.

The quality of immigrants Italy gets is so much worse from a human capital perspective. Their Asian and Indian immigrants are not like ours. Instead of Latinos they get maghrebis.

Their Africans are not the Nigerian Igbo elites that we get.

If the us got Italian immigrant quality, if you take the number of guns we have in the country, people would be a lot more pissed and militant.

To be fair, we didn’t get Italy’s best and brightest, either. I say this is a third generation Italian American.

That’s true.

Luigi Galleani is like the Italian American bin laden

In general, I think Americans would benefit by taking off their rose-colored glasses wrt Europe. They have some features we could benefit from learning from, but people there tend to be more nationalistic and ethnocentric, and do not apply the same level of scrutiny and skepticism about their own governments. Italy is not a utopia of pasta and free health care.

I recently attended a climate lecture that validates your point. The lecturer said that climate change had actually brought more rain to the area of Africa he worked in, which benefited the local crops. Migration actually was a problem for the area, as they lacked resources to do the farming. However, migration continues for social reasons; apparently, it is socially prestigious to have a child in Europe.

He completely dismissed the idea of climate migration, saying this was a scare term for Europeans to get them to implement anti-climate change policies lest they be over run by hordes of "climate" migrants from Africa. So in some sense the term is actually racist.

Pay no attention to long-term climate changes tied to historic records for drought, flooding and extreme temperatures.

Ok, but this is experienced in the wealthy countries as well, is that not? Why aren't we seeing excess of refugees from our flooded and dried up and fire prone areas in the US? Most of the refugees seem to come from the unstable countries, not from our areas beaten up by repeated hurricanes, dried up rivers and yearly fires.

See above post - we are fed the same propaganda as Europeans. Makes it easier to condition population to accept lower standards of living and start treating what we took for granted in 1st world - heating/cooling, electricity, personal vehicles, single family homes, airline travel, etc as luxuries that should only be available to the rich like it's the case in the 3rd world. Because the cost of everything is going up, how will you explain to the angry peasants why they can no longer afford comforts they took for granted and have them be happy to sacrifice? Climate change and Putin.
