This^. Nobody thinks any freedoms or respects need to be taken away because of race or poverty or mental health but if one citizen's issues effect other citizens, social service, police or security needs to do their job.

Every citizen has a right to feel safe, that's why taxpayer pay for government and other services.

Hmmm I wonder if anyone has considered enforcing immigration laws.

How do you enforce a law when the bus , sent by a governor, arrives at 1am with women and small children who haven't eaten for two days. It's despicable. 3,400 people since May.

I believe the pp was referring to prior to them arriving at the governor's state. As in why should that state have to handle all the costs?

They arrived legally and are in the US legally. And they're probably thrilled to get out of Texas - I know the first buses, at least, were full of volunteers. There are many humanitarian issues with the situation but they're not here illegally.

Curious… why do you think they’re here legally? The articles I’ve read don’t spell it out but lots suggest these were people “caught” crossing the border. Doesn’t sound like there here legally.

It's been widely reported that these are asylum seekers and others with legitimate claims under immigration law, but who still need to do more to stay here permanently / may ultimately be deported. They present themselves at the border, not sneak in. Here's just one article:

“These are all migrants who have been processed by C.B.P. and are free to travel,” Jen Psaki, the White House press secretary, recently said, referring to Customs and Border Protection, the agency that oversees border operations.
https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/26/us/politics/abbott-immigration-texas-dc-biden.html

Because Abbott cannot force people to take the buses, they are all volunteers trying to get somewhere, usually to stay with family. The DMV may be their destination or a waypoint.

I don't mean this in a snide way but the idea that an R governor would release people into the US who have no legal right to be here, is nuts. It would be political suicide, as well as outside his authority since Feds control immigration.

IDK why the city defaulted long ago to Starbucks, public libraries and grocery store cafe bathrooms serving as homeless day service centers. I would be really unhappy as an employee who signed up for a different sort of job, to provide the constant cleaning and interaction for "camper outers" , some of whom have severe addiction, mental illness and hygiene challenges.

Truly despicable. This is why DC needs to be a state now.

You are OK with people who haven't eaten for two days (or longer) being received and processed by Texas, but not by DC? 3,400 is a drop in the pan compared to what Texas handles on a daily basis. Why don't you get on out there and set up sandwiches and soup reception, like the Poles did for the Ukrainians?

People on drugs or with mental illness are a really hard problem.

Buses full of legal migrants from Texas are not a safety threat and they’re easy to help. They need a hot meal, probably a place to stay in many cases or help getting to where they’re going.

The two problems are light years apart.

Is there any way to privatize and/or lease out the space in Union Station? Like a shopping mall or any other private space generally open to the public, a commercial operator would have strong financial and liability incentives to keep out dangerous and disorderly conduct.

It has been privatized.

Also the common areas? Or is this maybe a case of the landlord not doing their job?

You've a point. Why no compassion for them?

Anonymous wrote:Who are they? Who is legally responsible to keep it clean and safe? Would someone sue them for not doing their job? This is unacceptable? Train station isn't a place for refugees, homeless, mentally ill and druggies. Send everyone to where they can be helped. Make it safe so travelers can travel, businesses can earn, dinners can ear, shoppers can shop. Add a gym , a dry cleaner, a grocery store, a barber, an express food takeout shop, a breakfast box to go place, things related to travel.

This is the landlord for the retail spaces at Union Station. If you study there track record everywhere, you will see that they are never going to be part of the solution.

Ben Ashkenazy is not a good guy. His family business makes the Trump organization look like saints.

My guess is many of them took the free transportation and will continue to where they planned to go or had always planned to stay in DC. How many people just hop in a very long bus ride to another random [place just because the bus is free.

How do you expect state governments to handle illegal immigrants when the federal government does nothing to protect its borders and enforce laws already on the books?
