Mid 40s woman. Husband is early 50s and aging fast. Children all grown up now. Mid 20s. SO NOW WHAT?

I’ll be 48 when my youngest of 3 goes off to college. I’m planning to travel travel travel throughout my fifties.

My aunt is 65 and just diagnosed with dementia

You aren’t guaranteed to get old and still be with it. Best to have your kids early and retire early if you can when you can still enjoy your life.

Hold on there, missie.

I met my husband when we were 25--and it was a whirlwind! We partied HARD. We traveled all around the world (first class too with frequent flier miles from his business). We were in Europe for weeks several times a year and we even took a sabbatical to basically just party for 6 months: Berlin nightclubs, all night raves in Barcelona, the tomato festival, run with the Bulls, you name it. We were out to dinner in fancy restaurants with our couple friends and we all often traveled together--skiing in Montana, etc.

SO--we had 7 years to really travel while we were in the prime of our life..and they had kids at 35 and 37. Our kids are now teens in high school and we will be 55-56 when they graduate, but we still do cross-fit, lift weights, hike, bike, ski, run, etc., can beat people half our age in exercise classes.

I wanted to travel young too when I wouldn't look out of place in a nightclub, seeing the world through the eyes of a younger person. Travel in your 20s/early 30s is much different at 50/60/70. Both are great, but I'm glad my spouse did all of that traveling young before kids...and will do it again in 4 years (we still travel with the kids a lot, but their sports/activities make it less so).

I'm a man in my 50s and I see a lot of women age 40-55 on the dating apps. You're fooling yourself if you think women after 40 look "youthful and vibrant". Just compare to photos of women who are actually youthful (under 30) and this is quite clearly. That said, some women over 45 have indeed aged extremely rapidly, others haven't. Possibly some of the latter group aren't using recent photos, or have photoshopped them in some way, who knows. But I assure you that at some point after 45, sooner or later everyone stops looking "youthful and vibrant".

Dude, did you watch 'Halftime' on J. Lo? She's 52 and looking great. Don't think she'd pick you though.

Oh FFS what a painfully stupid comment. Do you think the women on the dating apps, the women you see every day, or the women on DCUM are anything like JLo? They're not. Do you think that JLo is at all representative of an age 40-55 woman? She's not. Bringing up JLo or any other actress/model in a discussion of how women look as they age is totally irrelevant, not least because photos of such women are generally heavily edited to remove any signs of age.

I think the point is that J Lo. shows that it is POSSIBLE to age well if someone works for it. I saw that she did two pull-ups unassisted at the gym which they showed on the special. That's something women have to train for if they want to achieve it. J. Lo. is #goals.

"It is possible to age well if you were already movie-actress hot to begin with, and if you have the money and time to devote to remaining hot, and if you have a team of publicists whose job is to make sure you look hot in all your photos" is not much of a point, really, and is certainly not applicable to anyone in this forum.

J. Lo started from nothing. If you look at her Fly Girl days, she was kinda chunky and had a big nose. Sure, she's had work done but she's definitely worked hard physically to have a fit and toned physique at 52.

Plenty women age well, stay fit and don't go out of the house looking frumpy. Nicole Murphy and Tracee Ellis Ross both regularly post their workouts on social media. I know PLENTY women who are 45+ who look just as phenomenal as the celebs I named.

LMAO at the hilarious stupidity of citing actresses and models as evidence that women can age well.

This is like citing Tom Cruise as evidence that “plenty of short men can date actresses and models!”

This poster and those like him are missing the point on two fronts:
1) Women in their 40s, 50s and 70s are living better lives than these PPs are, while the PPs try to bash them on the Internet, and
2) The thread isn't about whether a woman in her 40s looks like a woman in her 20s. She doesn't need to look 20 to be f gorgeous AND fulfilled.

But they know all that deep down and they can't stand it; so much so that they keep returning to this and other threads to whine at women "you're notttt wooooorrrthy!"

Writing this mostly for any younger women reading this who may be afraid of turning 25, 30, 40, 50, etc. based on the misogynistic lies that prop up the patriarchy.

The over 40 years old posters in this thread are the ones who brought up "youthfulness" in describing themselves and they got called out on it.

So in essence they are the ones who started it.

Over 40 is by no means youthful. Stop kidding yourselves.

Obviously, figure out what's going on with your husband, intervene. If he retired early, help him find a hobby or interest to keep him engaged to avoid cognitive decline.

You should work or volunteer or something.

And then be one of those awesome grandma's that full of energy with her grandkids and helps her children balance all of life's obligations.

Lol we use to live next to an “A” lister. Her day started with her person trainer in the morning. Next up was the person chef had breakfast ready to go, followed by her team- her assistant, stylists, person shopper, makeup professional, etc. She had two live in nannies and house keeping. Late in the afternoon she would go for a run in the hills. The point being it is those women’s job to look the best they can and they have the resources and time to do it. Still when they stand next to a 20 something they will look old and frumpy. That is live.

BS. Gabrielle Union looks better than any 20 something.

No. Go watch “The Other Woman” Cameron Diaz(42), Leslie Mann(42) and Kate Upton (22). When the 22 year old stands next to the 42 year old you really see the difference. Just like if Gabrielle Union was standing next to Halle Lynn Bailey. People would think she is her mom.

Wrong again. Halle Bailey in her 20’s looks like a teenager and Gabrielle Union looks like her older 20’s sister, not her mom. I agree with you on Kate Upton and the other 2, but that’s because Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann just look aged. Even Kate in that movie looks older, like 30, not 22, but still younger looking than Cameron and Leslie.

As someone the same age as you, but with kids that are very young, I really don't understand your question. Why would it be "all downhill"? You now have time and freedom to do what YOU want to do. No more squeezing in a little me time here and there. Sounds amazing.

Gabrielle Union does not look like she is in her late 20s.

Do you want to see proof?

Here is Gabrielle Union right next to her 28 year old self.

If you cannot see the obvious difference well then you are obviously blind.

Ray Charles himself would tell you that you are BUSTED and to HIT THE ROAD JACK.

There’s a difference but in the older picture she looks younger and is plausibly playing a teenager at 28. She only looks slightly older on the left. Not sure what the point of your last sentence and yelling is other than you’re having an age related mental break.

I don't know any women 47+ who have aged "extremely rapidly." All of my friends are still youthful and vibrant. Some going back to school, still enjoying concerts + travel, still super stylish. None of my friends have fallen off. Me included. 49 this year.

+1

LMAO at the hilarious stupidity of citing actresses and models as evidence that women can age well.

This is like citing Tom Cruise as evidence that “plenty of short men can date actresses and models!”

100% facts. These women on here are delusional.

DP here. Well said regarding the misogynistic men and women on this thread who love to tell older women how they're not worthy. I see so many posts telling women to just accept casual sex and suppress their desires for a relationship. Or middle aged men telling women they don't want them because they date 22-29 year olds, as if any sane young woman wants some 40+ year old guy.

The only part I'll quibble with is that we 40+ women don't look "youthful." However, that shouldn't be the goal. We can still be fit, healthy, beautiful, kind, and smart.

Someone just proved to you that Gabrielle Union does not look like she is in her 20s and you are still in denial.
