NBC is trying to add some context instead of just ignoring it. Something along the lines of “China doesn’t care about what western countries think of it.” Which is interesting considering most western countries have a terrible history of atrocities (oh, but we’re cool now). Not all western countries, but most. Also, how China is viewed by western counties vs, other emerging nations.

Anyway, that aside, I delight in complicated fireworks set to frisson-inducing music.

China can go atrocity for atrocity with any other nation in the world. By sheer body count, it's probably between them and the British depending on how far back you want to go. The difference is that most western countries have tone it down recently

The US, Britain, China, France, Russia, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Japan.. it’s all a pretty bloody, brutal history. It’s almost like cultural dominance comes with inevitable atrocities throughout human history?

Finland seems cool. Helsinki 2030?!?

So pp ready to move to China since we are just as bad?

It’s frankly appalling that the IOC awarded the Games to the CCP knowing China is committing genocide against so called minority groups in their claimed borders. China’s level of surveillance and disregard for human rights is appalling. I hope the athletes left their phones at home otherwise all will be tracked and added to the mammoth CCP database that tracks everything.

Absolutely! And why is the corrupt IOC never addressed ?

The short program by the Russian figure skater - holy hell.

If you mean 15-year-old Kamila Valiyeva - it was inspirational!!

The coverage shown on NBC is done by national NBC, not local, and they do provide commentary by Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir.

In contrast a lot of Asian females are literally falling in their routines. Including Karen Chen. This one wasn't as bad as Yi who fell twice and ran straight into a wall.

What’s amazing is how mature her skating is. Not a touch of coltishness about her! That’s hours at the ballet bar .

Not sure why you think their Asian-ness has anything to do with their falling.

By the way, Zhu Yi, the skater representing China, was born in LA, and she’s catching heck from Chinese media today for her poor performance.

Karen Chen is American. Why is pp talking about “Asian skaters”?

Who said their race had anything to do with them falling? They're literally the only ones falling though. But yes - Zhu Yi is getting hell, especially because the Chinese netizens think she was given a spot representing China over a deserving Chinese native named Chen Hongyi who apparently is world's better.

Yeah, it’s a shame we’ll probably only get to enjoy her for a minute.

Valieva lucked out in that she happened to be born in the right year, 2006, so that she became eligible for these Olympics just as she reached the peak of her powers, pushing aside Russian skaters like Anna Scherbakova and Sasha Trusova, who dominated the last few years, but were born too soon. Just like Alina Zagitova, born in 2002, became eligible just in time for the 2018 Olympics and won it, pushing aside Russian Evgenia Medvedeva, who had dominated in the years prior, but was born too soon. We barely heard from Zagitova again. You can bet some tweener Russian girl skater, born in 2010, will likely make Valieva obsolete by the 2026 Olympics. No long-termers like Michelle Kwan and Irina Slutskaya anymore. I wish it wasn’t so. I would like to enjoy Valieva for years to come, but the system likely won’t let it happen.

I don't know what to tell you....Valieva has been around for a number of years if you bothered to follow the junior circuit. Zagitova is enjoying the rest of her life with multiple endorsements and professional shows. It is arguably a better setup to work hard until 16 and get out just in time for college and other opportunities. Zagitova is so stinkin' cute!

IDK about cute but her record is so so impressive. To accomplish all that she has - I believe she is the most medaled woman in Russian history and to do it all before her current age of 19. There is nothing you could tell me if I was her.

It's even more impressive when you remember that at one point her coach has kicked her off the team because she felt Alina was getting lazy and her family was wasting their time and money staying in Moscow. Alina's grandmother had to plead her case directly with the coach.
