Milley seems to consider himself the most important person in the room.

He has overstepped and this whole thing needs to be fully investigated. And, quite frankly - Milley should be questioned under oath. But, that will never happen because there is absolutely no accountability for misconduct or incompetence or lawbreaking under this administration.

"You never know what a president's trigger point is," Milley told his senior staff, according to the book.

In response, Milley took extraordinary action, and called a secret meeting in his Pentagon office on January 8 to review the process for military action, including launching nuclear weapons. Speaking to senior military officials in charge of the National Military Command Center, the Pentagon's war room, Milley instructed them not to take orders from anyone unless he was involved.

"No matter what you are told, you do the procedure. You do the process. And I'm part of that procedure," Milley told the officers, according to the book. He then went around the room, looked each officer in the eye, and asked them to verbally confirm they understood.

"Got it?" Milley asked, according to the book.

"Yes, sir."

Are you aware of the actions of the government in Nixon's final days? The Pentagon was worried that Nixon might launch a strike so they set up a system where no presidential order would go through without their approval.

Chris Miller also told Politico today that he knew Milley talked to the Chinese general.

The people also said that Milley did not go rogue in placing the call, as the book suggests. In fact, Milley asked permission from acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller before making the call, said one former senior defense official, who was in the room for the meeting. Milley also briefed the secretary’s office after the call, the former official said.

“We discussed beforehand and after his call with his Chinese counterpart,” the person said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss a sensitive topic.

In an interview Wednesday, Miller told POLITICO that Milley almost certainly told him he was going to call his Chinese counterpart, but he didn’t recall getting a detailed readout of the call after.

“Looking back, I imagine there was a perfunctory exchange between us and our staffs about coordinating phone calls and messages for the day,” he said. “I don’t recall the specifics and it certainly wasn’t in a detailed or more formal way. It was more perfunctory/routine.”

I'm a pretty big believer in civilian oversight of the military - didn't think Mattis or Austin should have been confirmed as SecDefs, and I really don't see anything Milley did as wrong, except maybe not going public or to Congress.

I don't think there's anything wrong with personally reviewing the nuclear protocols when a President has threatened nuclear action, and especially not when a President has gone out of his way to subvert normal protocol and install loyalists like Trump did. I can easily see a situation where an order came down without certainty of its source.

It appears the calls to China were done with full knowledge of Pentagon leadership.

Trump was a maniac, should have been impeached. I am glad to know there are people that wouldn't/won't turn a blind eye.

And for those who think otherwise, then I assume it was ok with you when Cheney, et al. manipulated intelligence on WMDs in Iraq and CIA leadership went along and drew us into an almost 20 year conflict?

If we had anywhere near a functional legislative branch we wouldn't have these issues.
