Many viruses cannot survive on hard surfaces for as long when the temperature is higher. Weeks ago I saw some inital research on covid19 indicating that it would live longer on a hard surface in cold temps versus warm temps. But the ambient temp doesnt make much difference for person to person transmission. So warmer weather should help a bit, depending on how big a factor transmission from things like door handles, touch screens, etc. is.

Sounds about right. It’s about time. Buying time for humankind.

Isn’t that only for the northern hemisphere though? And with our interconnectedness, won’t people from South America, etc, be flying to the US and spreading it around?

Depends on Trump’s flight restrictions. It ain’t going away in the warner months. But maybe it can lessen.

The coronavirus MERS is not seasonal and swept Saudi Arabia. The fact is we don't know if novel coronavirus will exhibit seasonal behavior or not because, well, it's novel.

We can, of course, hope.

Some scientists have reasonable hopes. Others are more skeptical. I think the comparison to SARS is more relevant

Hong Kong to evacuate citizens from Wuhan.

10:15 am: Hong Kong will bring back 533 citizens from Wuhan

Carrie Lam, Hong Kong’s chief executive, said 533 citizens currently in the mainland Chinese city of Wuhan will return via four charter flights.

The flights will return to Hong Kong on Wednesday and Thursday, said Lam, adding that all passengers on the flights will face a 14-day quarantine upon their arrival.

Why didn’t MERS and SARS have the same global spread?

Several people in my relatively small office just returned from meetings in affected areas—two were in Sacramento and two were in the Seattle area last week. I’m pretty sure they didn’t leave their hotels. How concerned would you be? I just kept using hand sanitizer all day today.

Not contagious until symptomatic. First symptom of SARS is a high fever.

COVID-19 is contagious before symptoms appear and initial symptom can be a mild cough.

Also this virus isn't nearly as deadly.

True. Killing a lot of your hosts isn't a great virus long-term survival strategy.
