The non stop Acela is new anyway -- as in this year. It didn't get a whole lot of traction bc as soon as the service started, companies started cutting business travel weeks later. Better for them to cut it now, save some $ on running 1/2 empty trains, and do a better launch whenever biz travel comes back.

Yeah so I'm canceling without rebooking. No one knows whether this will look better 2 mos from now or 4 mos from now and with lots of things you get to rebook for free once and that's it. If you MUST reschedule, I'd say don't do it for this year; re schedule this year's spring or summer vacation for next year's spring or summer as that gives you the best chance that it goes forward -- esp if they are able to get a vaccine going by March-Apr of 2021 as they had originally estimated.

There is some evidence that people with heart conditions are more likely to be hospitalized for COVID-19: https://www.heart.org/en/news/2020/02/27/what-heart-patients-should-know-about-coronavirus

There is some very preliminary evidence that, even in those who recover, it may also cause heart damage.

So, no, in your shoes I’d very regretfully skip this wedding.

Thanks for the sanity check. Canceled.

Fortunately it's not a wedding, unfortunately it was a very much needed (haven't gone anywhere besides work and home in 13 mos) 3 day getaway. TBH I feel like a paranoid idiot for canceling as friends etc. are like -- it's only Florida, NBD, they have healthcare there; not that many cases; etc. Reality is I don't discuss my heart valve issue so it's not like casual friends/coworkers etc. can see that I have it. Not worth chancing it -- simply moving thru airports, touching TSA bins etc. I knew it was hitting harder for people with any underlying heart disease, did not realize there was any research that even preliminary suggested this CAUSING heart damage. Definitely cannot risk that for a vacation that I could go on in 6 mos or 1 yr or whatever.

Yeah I agree w the PP. Normally I'd say go, hand washing etc. esp. since you really need a vacation. But for anyone with ANY heart issue, no way it is NOT worth it. Florida will be there this fall, this winter etc. This is also why I'd wish people IRL would back off with their unsolicited opinions. Among my coworkers, I too am hearing a lot of -- OMG you wouldn't travel, you're THAT scared, are you living in your bunker, you're 35 yrs old NBD if you got it it'd be a cold etc. -- making people feel bad if they're otherwise young and don't look to have risk factors but am canceling. Reality is there ARE young people like you with heart issues or lung issues or whatever that they aren't sharing with the world, so back off and let them make their own decisions.

Would fly everywhere but New York, usually I take the Acela for that trip but open to flying if that is somehow less risky. My company has encouraged us to rethink "non-essential" travel and says they'll support anyone who feels comfortable traveling right now but leadership seems to consider client travel essential. Feeling very stuck and put in an unnecessarily risky position right now.

Me too. I have Los Angeles, Dallas and San Francisco in the next 5 weeks. Leadership is going so it’s not going to look good if I balk.

My husband is traveling to client sites right along with you guys. No choice.

This is more a traveling question than a health question so I'll ask it here.

What happens to tourists who are visiting in Milan, Venice or Parma right now during this lockdown?

Can they come back home or are they stuck for a month?

From a US perspective you can come right in and waltz around down. IDK if there a lockdown on the Italian side. If there's a lock down there and/or if flights are being canceled back to the US, yeah then you're staying there but I haven't heard anything re - if you were locked down anyplace else in the world, that means 14 quarantine here (EXCEPT from Wuhan or from that cruise). All others coming from Beijing etc. were told to self quarantine and while I think many did, you know there's people who were like -- that's ridiculous, I'm going to the movies.

That's what I want to know too. I'm sending my high school kid to another country with a family friend in a few weeks and trying to decide if we should cancel. I'm not really worried about him getting the virus, but if he did, I'm worried about him being quarantined in a different country and being alone.

Italy just announce possible quarantine of the entire Lombardy region. That’s 16 million people unable to come in or go out.

^For those that have been to Italy and specifically Lombardy -- what's it like/how big is it? Is this the equivalent of locking down a US state or 5 US states or half the US? Also how's the living situation there -- densely congested like apts in China or more single family homes etc.

Watch it spread across Italy and European countries next.

Meanwhile all the people scoffing at us telling them not to go to France, Germany, and Italy - I hope you're preparing to be locked in a region and a country whose language you don't speak, cost of living is higher, with foreign doctors (if you get sick), and away from your family / off-work for an indeterminate amount of time.

Could say I told you so but...

Lombardy is the size of South Carolina and its the fashion capital of Italy/Europe. Very wealthy area.

They are now holding a third ship in Long Beach, CA while they test a passenger for C19.

At some point will they have to just temporarily stop cruises? They don't have the capicity to quarantine every ship that comes into a US port for 2 weeks. Or even a fraction of them.

Or else they have to give up on the quarantines. Its going to become logistally impossible.
